The Rubens Are At Their Most Vulnerable With ‘Are You Getting High’
Following on from their recent single Goanna, The Rubens give us Are You Getting High, an emotionally charged song about the aftermath of a relationship that was never meant to last.
Are You Getting High sees The Rubens at their most vulnerable – balancing heartbreak with quiet acceptance, the song captures the lingering ache of watching someone you love move on while coming to terms with your own role in the unravelling.
Driven by the band’s signature blend of soulful vocals, moody grooves and indie-rock production, Are You Getting High taps into a universal feeling of longing and emotional distance. It’s a bittersweet meditation on love and the clarity that comes with hindsight, delivered with the honesty and warmth that have become synonymous with The Rubens’ sound.
The music video for Are You Getting High was filmed at the Camden Show and depicts Sam Margin as the protagonist, alone and deep in thought as he reflects on a past relationship, while surrounded by a bustling crowd. The juxtaposition of what should be a joyous occasion, and the reality of the characters inner thoughts is steeped in a heartbreaking and universally relatable emotion.
Elliott Margin explains that “They’ve moved on and found someone new and you’re happy for them. Kind of. Not really. But maybe soon and that’s ok.” Adding that “This song was buried in the pile of demos stored in the cloud somewhere above our heads. Some songs stay there forever, but this one managed to escape. We love it and are glad it finally made it out.“
