Mix Tape 34
Plenty of awesome new selections in Mix Tape 34, give it a spin…
Recorded with Chris Collins in NSW’s Northern Rivers region, Lustre is a celebration of The Buoys as one of the nation’s hardest working live acts, with the entire album recorded live together. As their debut full length body of work, the band committed themselves the opportunity and space to explore the full breadth of their sonic capabilities, all while thoughtfully unpacking a spectrum of emotions and life experiences. Whether it’s biting back on the male gaze on Subject A , yearning for a love that’s slipping away on Holding On, being there for your friends on Check Mate or the giddy feeling of a new love on the latest single and music video for Ahead Of Myself, Lustre is as rich lyrically as it is sonically, taking intimately personal experiences and making them completely universal. A seamless meld of indie, rock, punk, alternative and more, Lustre finally arrives as a celebration of what The Buoys do best; making self-assured, gut punching rock music.
Last month, The Buoys announced they are hitting the road for a national tour this August and September. Presented by triple j, the Lustre Album Tour will head to Hobart, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth.
Two of Australia’s most celebrated voices, Meg Mac and Matt Corby, announce the release of their collaborative single, Bricks. This marks Meg Mac’s first-ever collaborative single release, bringing together two powerful and distinct musical talents in a unique and mesmerizing duet.
“This all happened about a month ago and wasn’t a very thought-out process. I started writing “Bricks” and thought it would make a nice duet (I’ve always wanted to sing a duet, but no one has ever asked me!). So, I sent a voice memo to Matt, one of my favourite singers, not really expecting him to say yes. But a couple of weeks later, I was on my way to Rainbow Valley, where we finished writing the song and recorded it straight away with Chris Collins. I can’t believe it’s coming out this quickly, and now I have my first duet and so happy that it is with Matt Corby!” explains Mac.
“Meg is a great singer and writer. We were collaborating already on some writing, and she sent me an idea to see if I would be keen to write and duet with her. We jumped into the studio pretty much straight away and I’m loving what we came out with” adds Corby.
Kylie Minogue releases brand new single, My Oh My, with Bebe Rexha and Tove Lo – out now via Liberator Music (Part of the Mushroom Group) / BMG.
After a week of teasing the track from the inimitable pop-star trio, fans have been eagerly anticipating the release of My Oh My. With a nod to the unmistakable Kylie ‘la la la’ refrain, a thumping bass line, playful lyrics and produced by the legendary Steve Mac (Calvin Harris, Little Mix, Ed Sheeran, One Direction, P!nk), the song is destined to be a dance floor favourite.
Adelaide pop-punk, self-professed “two-piece puzzle”, TOWNS have shared their introspective new single l8tely out now everywhere via Farmer & The Owl.
Following on from recent single Birthdays released in April, new single l8tely takes inspiration from the iconic pop punk bands of the early 2000’s like Good Charlotte and Sum 41 that the guys had been spinning on repeat when working on the song. “‘l8tely’ is written about feeling like sh*t but being aware of it” TOWNS say. “It’s that introspective realisation of knowing you’re feeling a certain way and knowing how to fix it but not doing anything about it. Within reason, I think it’s healthy to wallow a little bit but not get too caught up in your own thoughts. We’ve been listening to heaps of Y2K pop-punk over the past year and it definitely reflects in this one.”
The new single follows on from TOWNS joining Australian punk legends Between You & Me on their national headline tour earlier this year in May playing to raucous, high energy crowds across the country. ‘l8tely’ also lands ahead of the duo jumping on tour with Trophy Eyes playing as a special guest on their national headline tour coming up in August.
London soulful art-pop duo Andy Clutterbuck and James Hatcher – better known as HONNE – share their new single Backseat Driver, the latest release following Imaginary, Songs In My Head and ‘Girl In the Orchestra’ to be taken from their new album OUCH out on Friday 6 September via Smile More Recordings / AWAL Recordings.
The beautifully introspective Backseat Driver showcases HONNE’s ability to turn deeply personal experiences into something universally relatable. “It was written as a result of having some therapy sessions, which ended up being more casual conversations about my life and who I was as a person”, explains Andy Clutterbuck. “In my teens and growing up I always thought I was quite outgoing. I certainly wasn’t shy and felt lucky to have a broad range of friends in different circles. As I’ve gotten older, I feel the opposite has happened and for whatever reason I feel I’ve become much more of an introvert and for a long time I’ve felt almost ashamed of this, like it was wrong to be like this in some way, especially for someone who is one of the front people of a band. Having therapy allowed me to understand that there’s nothing wrong with the way I am and helped me change my view on being an introvert. ‘Backseat Driver’ is about coming to terms with and enjoying taking the backseat and going by unnoticed.”
Hot on the heels of the announcement of their debut Australian headline shows, Australian three-piece Blusher release new single Overglow.
A buzzy, sparkling crush confession, the song is full of the fizzy excitement and energy you carry around with you when you’re completely obsessed with someone. Starting in Melbourne, the song was finished whilst the band were on tour in the US, then mixed in London, whilst the visualiser was shot in Tokyo.
Say Blusher of the track: “We channelled the feeling of our first crushes, a shimmering Tokyo skyline, and Britney Spears riding a motorbike through the sky in the Toxic video.
It’s done a whole lap of the world with us, and we couldn’t be more excited to share it. We hope it leaves people radiating with energy and inspires someone to yell their crush confession over the music on the dancefloor.”
Los Angeles’ Militarie Gun share new song Thought You Were Waving alongside a cheeky Neta Ben Ezra-directed video portraying the band in unruly and dangerous situations. Thought You Were Waving was featured by Zane Lowe today on his New Music Daily show and marks the first proper new music from the band since the release of their lauded debut album Life Under The Gun last year, ushering in a new chapter for the limitless band. Thought You Were Waving was created with Zachary Dawes (Lana Del Rey, Sharon van Etten, Bully, Elton John).
“Thought You Were Waving is a song about not knowing when someone else is asking you for help, we are all so caught up in our own lives that it can be really easy to miss the subtle smoke signals of others.” explains Militarie Gun’s Ian Shelton. “At the same time, it is also about not knowing how to ask for help. I wanted to do a continually descending melody with a very tough backbone, kind of like if the Beatles rhythm section was made of idiot punk musicians. Everything we do is through the lens of idiot punk musicians.”
Gold-selling Netherlands-born LA- (via Australia) based Iraqi-Syrian artist Wafia unveils her new single Crystal Ball. This single, along with forthcoming releases, is executive produced by esteemed Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Sabrina Claudio, who is also featured in the official music video.
“Crystal Ball”, an effervescent pop cut, “is about how, if I could look into the future, I would choose not to. I’m in love with this moment,” Wafia says. “Sabrina heard the potential of what ‘Crystal Ball’ could be from the demo very early on, and was like, ‘You have to go back to the studio,’ so we went back in and just got a little bit weird with it. ‘Let’s just have fun and make it super dreamy.’ I love it now.”
Wafia continues, “I’m so grateful to have found a friend and collaborator in Sabrina that I can write songs with, shoot a music video, and then go out and cry over dinner with. It’s been such a special experience and collaboration that’s left me so proud of the outcome.”
Sabrina notes, “When Wafia asked me if I’d be willing to star in the video for “Crystal Ball,” it was by far the easiest yes. It’s one of my favourites. Along with helping to sonically bring this song to the finish line, creating with Wafia in this way was a different level of fulfillment. So campy and silly, the video is a perfect display of how much fun she and I had throughout the whole process.”
A hypnotic blend of grit and post punk narcosis, the brand new single Unfamiliar Boy out now from Gold Coast five-piece Chavez Cartel is a woozy yet powerful continuation of the group’s trademark sound, serving up simmering intensity alongside a fittingly moody music video also
out now.
Opening in a stripped-back haze, Unfamiliar Boy soon grows to oscillate between smoky simplicity and raucous choruses, headily driven by the repeated mantra “I wanna change, I need a change / I’m only human after all” and healthy servings of post punk rock. With nods to the psychedelic stylings Iggy and the Stooges as well as IDLES, Arctic Monkeys and Fontaines D.C., Unfamiliar Boy ultimately draws you headfirst into a vivid reflection on the overwhelming rollercoaster that is time, as the band explains, “The song was inspired by a period of time where life seemed to be going really fast and having the feeling where you don’t have time to even think. Like life is slipping through your fingers and you can’t quite grasp what’s really going on. Not a good headspace to be in. There’s a line coming out of the breakdown, “I need to wheel-spin in the mud, now that the months feel more like weeks”, that paints the mental picture of that feeling. It’s sort of like a plea where I’m going “If my head is going to go round in circles this fast can’t we at least stand still while we’re burning out and overheating so we’re not wasting any more time while we’re doing it?”.
Alison Moyet inspired a wave of fan anticipation when she announced the October 4th release date of her upcoming album Key, a collection of 16 reworked singles, fan favourites and deep cuts boosted by two new songs. It quickly became Amazon’s #1 selling vinyl above Taylor Swift, Coldplay and Billie Eilish, while the world-class talent that propelled Alison to achieve two #1 albums, six Top 10 singles, three BRIT Awards and a Grammy nomination was put back in the spotlight with a stunning Radio 2 Piano Room session.
One of the lesser-discovered gems from Alison’s published works, So Am I features on her 1994 album Essex. Lyrically, a wry and sardonic out-of-body observation of defeat, it is counted amongst Moyet’s favourites. The Key version refocuses attention on the song in a collection which aims to unify her back catalogue into a cohesive form for live presentation. Written with Ian Broudie of The Lightning Seeds, So Am I in its new iteration, joins the iconic re-visited
All Cried Out and the brand-new song Such Small Ale in previewing the Key album. A set that contextualises and acknowledges 40 years of original work, gathering together hits and deep cuts alike for an album where no re-packaging was desired. Produced and arranged by Sean McGhee, So Am I is also graced by Suede guitarist Richard Oakes, one of Alison’s other key collaborators in this collection.
Melbourne rock trio Sisters Doll, recently released the best rock song of 2024! Debuting at #1 on the Australian iTunes Rock Singles Chart making it FOUR IN A ROW!
Don’t Give Up On Us is simply epic. Tension driven verses lead into bombastic sing-along chorus that will instantly etch itself onto your soul. Passionate, vulnerable and powerful, Don’t Give Up On Us, has all the hallmarks of a classic, rock ballad with a touch of modernity and familiarity.
Now, the band have released the supporting music video
Frontman Brennan Mileto comments “This video is special to us because it’s our first video clip showcasing our youngest brother and new bass player Sage. This has been a long time coming and “Don’t Give Up On Us” deserved a great clip. We are super proud of this song, as it really showcases a side of the band not everyone has seen before. We are excited because this track shows what the band is capable of and it features the growth of the band to not only being a rock band but an all round band that will hopefully stand the test of time.”
Sleaford Mods have released two previously unheard tracks, Git Some Balls and Air Con (a reworking of the track Air Conditioning) ahead of the 10th anniversary edition of their scene stimulating, acclaimed album Divide and Exit.
Git Some Balls was written and recorded by Andrew Fearn and Jason Williamson during the sessions for the album, but is only being made available now for the first time via streaming services, while it will also feature on a one-off flexi-disc which will come only with limited edition copies of the reissue.
“Git Some Balls was one of those studio floor clippings that we didn’t feel quite hit the mark at the time, but today sounds great,” admits Williamson of the track. “We knew what we wanted for the album, and we didn’t feel this was quite right for Divide and Exit. What’s weird is that the rejects always sound wicked when you revisit them, as good as the stuff that got through to form the album which says a lot about the way we work and where our heads were at the time. There wasn’t anyone in the country doing what we were doing at that point, it feels like it was 30 years ago, but it’s only been 10. Mad as fuck.”
Australian sensation CYRIL teams up with singer-songwriter Dean Lewis for their new single Fall At Your Feet, a dance-pop gem that serves as a follow-up to CYRIL’s 2023 breakthrough hit Stumblin’ In and his official remix for Disturbed’s The Sound Of Silence from February this year; both have just surpassed combined 400M streams on Spotify alone with Stumblin’ In entering Global Top 50 on the platform just recently and collecting a steady number of 2M streams daily.
Keeping with his dreamy and versatile sonic style, the new track opens with Lewis’s soulful topline accompanied by a wistful piano solo, setting the stage for the gradual introduction of ethereal melodies that blend into a chorus complemented by a muted, undulating bassline. With its combination of organic production and emotive vocals, Fall At Your Feet is primed for breezy hangouts and plenty of radio play. CYRIL was also praised by Spotify’s US Pop Editor in an interview with Billboard, who emphasised its longevity and international appeal of Stumblin’ In.
The two artists began working together when Dean reached out to CYRIL via social media, and now we are blessed with Fall At Your Feet, which is the first single from CYRIL’s upcoming EP – From Down Under.
Waxahatchee’s Tigers Blood has been a critics’ favourite of 2024 with the album topping most mid-year Best Of lists. Katie Crutchfield’s raw and piercing songwriting has connected with fans globally with shows selling out around North America and across the UK and Europe. On the album Crutchfield emerges as a powerhouse – an ethnologist of the self – forever dedicated to revisiting her wins and losses.
Now, she returns with the video for Tigers Blood, which gives a gorgeous fly-on-the-wall look at the making of the album at Sonic Ranch in Texas with producer Brad Cook. The video, which opens with a voice memo from Crutchfield, has the same perfect blend of nostalgia and timelessness as Tigers Blood, and captures a special moment in time when this masterful album was being recorded.
THE THE have released Linoleum Smooth To The Stockinged Foot, the second single from Ensoulment, their long-awaited new studio album out on earMUSIC on Friday, September 6.
The song is co-produced by Matt Johnson and Warne Livesey and will be available as a limited 7” vinyl from Friday, August 2.
The lyrics for this song – which touch upon the nascent bio-security state – were written from Matt Johnson’s hospital bed, under the influence of morphine whilst recovering from a life-saving operation. As fate would have it, Johnson’s weeks in hospital had nothing to do with Covid, but occurred at precisely the time Covid reached crisis proportions, making for an even more surreal ordeal.
The discordant interplay between horns and fiddle is redolent of Johnson’s hallucinogenic, surreal experience, which he tried to emulate by asking the musicians to improvise over the track, without hearing the other’s contribution, as he manipulated the sounds in real time.
Linoleum Smooth To The Stockinged Foot is unique in that it does not feature any of the core band members apart from Johnson on vocals, guitar and bass, plus guest musicians Sonya Cullingford on fiddle, Terry Edwards on horns, Gillian Glover providing backing vocals, and hand claps from percussionist Danny Cummings.
Nairobi-born, Adelaide-based singer, rapper and producer, Elsy Wameyo shares her new single, Conquer out via AWAL. The song appears on her debut studio album Saint Sinner, set to be released on July 26, 2024.
A comforting release of energy, Conquer stars an array of playful harns, lapping rhythms and an irresistible melodic motif sung by collaborator Ywaya Tajiri. Wameyo shines on the track, providing an upbeat burst of resilience and play on words to showcase the fruits of believing in the power of dealing with the bad, and making it to the other side.
Elsy says on Conquer:
“It is I, the most divine, here to make a mockery of all your false perceptions. Refined by a fire you all fail to discern. Ego. My subconscious mind forcefully feeds me with the possibilities of the impossible. My success lies solely in my hands as spoken by God almighty. What a joy it is to know one’s worth, that even through the trials and tribulations I trust and know that I will come out on top. I pray you experience this revelation one day.”
Irish singer-songwriter David Keenan returns with his new single, Radiate a Smile. Known for his evocative lyrics and poignant storytelling, Keenan captures the essence of summer optimism and the complexity of human relationships in this latest track.
“I like the idea that this song is two friends who share a deep platonic love, at the football, chatting shit in between people watching, slagging and confiding in one another. In a traditionally aggressive arena, there’s also intimacy,” Keenan shares about the inspiration behind the song.
He continues, “I like acknowledging the realities of our behaviours, awkwardness, and confusion as well as wit and tragedy in my writing while in this case, a leaning towards optimism as summer
approaches.”
Radiate a Smile delves into the transient nature of life and the importance of nurturing
relationships.
Keenan explains, “There’s an understanding in the song that says we’re only here briefly so let’s not be lazy with our relationships. Let’s keep the lines open and live fully in the knowledge that we’re only passing through.”
Melbourne dynamic rock-country performer Aimee Francis has just released her captivating new single, Magic.
With it’s upbeat energy and buoyant vibe, Magic is infectiously catchy, instantly familiar and will have you singing along on the first listen!
In the midst of the European rock festival season, Deep Purple has released Lazy Sod, the third song from their upcoming album =1.
Deep Purple’s latest song, Lazy Sod, is now available for streaming and as instant gratification track with all digital download pre-orders for =1.
Alongside the single release, the official music video for Lazy Sod is now live on Deep Purple’s YouTube channel.
Asked about the song’s inspiration, frontman Ian Gillan explained: “Recently, a young journalist asked me how many songs I had written in my life. I replied that the last time my assistant counted, twenty years ago, it was over 500. I felt quite accomplished until she pointed out Dolly Parton’s 5,000 songs, calling me a lazy sod. I couldn’t help but agree and wrote down the exchange in my notebook.” (ROCKS magazine, June 2024)
Currently on a huge regional and capital city tour across the country, Australian icon Ben Lee has revealed a brand new single So Damn Hard (to be So Damn Good), as well as the official video clip for the new single – an interactive, one-take video clip shot on a 360 camera created in collaboration with Byron Spencer (DEEPFAITH). The new single also follows on from a viral video with Australian creator Breakfast Shirts that picked up over 580K views on instagram, and 470K views on TikTok.
Recently announcing his forthcoming album, This One’s For The Old Headz, which is set for release on 20 September 2024, Ben reveals another taster of what’s to come with his new single ‘So Damn Hard (to be So Damn Good)’. Following on from recent singles ‘Lovers’ and ‘Heavy Metal’, speaking on the single Ben explains “This ditty is about swagger in the face of chaos, confidence in the face of failure, sexiness in the face of insecurity. It’s about believing in yourself even when you probably shouldn’t. Is it a joke or is it serious? I can’t tell anymore”.
Aussie music icons The Cat Empire had a massive 2023 as they ushered in a new era for the band with the release of their tenth studio album Where The Angels Fall, stormed stages across the globe performing to sold-out roomsand debuted at #5 on the ARIA Album Charts. Now they’re back with another dance-floor filler; La Gracia was inspired by trumpeter Lazaro’s first trip to Spain as a member of the band, co-written by lead singer Felix and featuring vocals by bassist GraceBarbesinging in her native Creole alongside Melbourne flamenco artists Arte Canela.
Coming to life as a Cat Empire track in sessions after shows around the world, with just voices, a keyboard, a Cuban tres, and a crowd of people partying backstage, Felix says, “It became a very melodic song that we celebratedto. It’s an ode to our musical adventures and influences from a country we love touring in.It’s going to be a killer live.”
Lazaro comments, “I was completely captivated by the dynamic exchange between the incredible Spanish crowds and The Cat Empire on stage during each concert in every city. It was truly something special. What started as a small idea quickly evolved into a song shaped by the creative contributions of each band member, dedicated to a remarkable country that has shown us immense love. Thank you, Spain. Olé!“
Following three months of teasing – that eagle-eyed fans might have noticed kicking off at Melbourne’s Homegrown Festival – Australian favourites Slowly Slowly return with anthemic new single Gimme The Wrench and announce their signing to Nettwerk Music Group.
Taking inspiration from the iconic Good Will Hunting scene that sees Will choose the wrench over the stick and belt, the track is quintessential Slowly Slowly – layering catchy, groove-filled melodies that are as at home in the mosh pit as they are made for hip shaking, with frontman Ben Stewart’s vulnerable songwriting delivered with a tongue-in-cheek wink.
Centred around the idea of not requesting leniency in an effort to test yourself, the track – produced by Courtney Ballard (5 Seconds of Summer, Waterparks, State Champs, Stand Atlantic, Good Charlotte) and mixed by UK heavyweight Jon Gilmore (The 1975, Nothing But Thieves, Middle Kids, Wolf Alice) – was Ben endeavouring to create an Eye Of The Tiger-esque pump up anthem for himself as he was heading into a highly stressful period of life.
Of the track, Ben says, “I knew that for the foreseeable future I would be spinning plates across multiple projects, family, touring and I wanted a song that would pump me up for it. There’s obviously a lot of reward in stretching out of your depth, and the metaphor of choosing the difficult path, when there are obvious ones of least resistance, seemed to resonate with me.”
New York City’s Monobloc are excited to share their second single, Where Is My Garden. The anthemic track documents the internal back-and-forth between materialistic tendencies and finding satisfaction with what you have, a dilemma artists and musicians tend to know best. Paired with a monochrome video, which premiered on Paste Magazine, is self-directed by the band, replete with wiry, insistent guitar work and a rousing chorus, marking the arrival of a new band with a significant future.
Discussing the themes of the track, lead vocalist Timothy Waldron says, “Attached to the main riff of the song was this chorus I really wanted to use but could never find a place where it made sense. “Where is my garden, where are my friends? Will it always feel like the end?” It was a great wide theme – a bit Springsteen and better yet, the closest I could legally get to saying “Where are your friends tonight?.”
On composing the song, bassist Michael Silvergrade says, “I wrote the guitar riff years ago, long before Monobloc was even a thing. We’ve never had more iterations of a single song idea, it just never came together. Yet, I persevered, and after we wrote the first couple of Monobloc tracks, we dug up the old demo.”
Following its recent debut at the Prime Minister’s Olympic and Paralympic dinner in Melbourne, ARIA Award-winning artist Jessica Mauboy unveils Higher, the uplifting and uniting Australian Team song for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
“It’s an absolute honour to lend my voice in support of our incredible Aussie athletes” shares Mauboy. “Higher” captures the spirit and energy of our amazing team, and I know I speak for all Aussies when I say we are thrilled to celebrate their dedication, passion, and the pride they bring to us all.”
Building on the momentum from their recent single the last one, visceral alternative four-piece Fan Girl reveal little pig, the second track from their forthcoming EP, real or staged which the band are excited to announce will drop Thursday 5 September via AWAL Recordings.
little pig embodies Fan Girl’s electrifying energy and knack for addictive riffs, marking a swirling, bombastic addition to real or staged. Packed with punchy tempo shifts, brash guitars and sprawling sampled strings, all layered beneath Noah Harris’ playful vocals, the track delves into the feeling of never being able to get enough, capturing the emotion of being both intoxicatingly surrounded and completely isolated.
Fan Girl on “little pig”:
“The track came together almost instantly. Dropped in our laps, like an otherwise unwanted bag of potatoes. And we were so ready to make some chippies. With “little pig”, we just wanted to make something sprawling, wonky and grand. Samples, strings, phasers, double drums. The full buffet.
Once we had wrapped up tracking at our studio, we sent it off to Oli Barton-Wood (Nilüfer Yanya, Shame, Do Nothing) in London, who added his secret mixing potion to the bubbling cauldron, before being delivered to mastering engineer Felix Davis (Porridge Radio, Folly Group, The Murder Capital) for the final mastering garnish. Bon Appetit my friends.”
Sierra Ferrell shares a new rendition of American Dreaming, her resilient rallying cry for self-care, that, says SPIN, succeeds in “diagnosing the ills of an entire generation… In other words, it sounds like a song for right now.” As the opening number to her multi-chart-topping album Trail of Flowers, the track has soared into a show-stopping centerpiece of her live set over these past several months. From performing it on an entirely sold-out run of headline tour dates, to stirring the stadium-sized heartstrings of 50,000 people with Zach Bryan,.
Ray LaMontagne – the celebrated Grammy award winning singer-songwriter, has unveiled a new single, Long Way Home. The track, releasing via the highly independent artist’s newly created label Liula Records, is the second taken from LaMontagne’s forthcoming, highly anticipated studio album, Long Way Home, out August 16. Long Way Home, the album’s title track, is a somber, bittersweet rumination on times past. LaMontagne sings, “Summertime, summertime / Said goodbye at the garden wall / From the house I can hear my momma callin’ / Winter come to us all my friend / Just as every childhood has an end,” as flashes of warm memories float by.
The previous single, Step Into Your Power, released early this month and is the fastest moving track of LaMontagne’s in the last ten years—this week saw a 15 position rise at radio to #13 at Mediabase Triple A. Accompanied by a stop-motion music video animated by his son Tobias, the foot-tapping, nostalgia laden track features choral backing vocals from The Secret Sisters and was praised by Atwood as “a gosh darned groove […] easygoing and uplifting, yet smooth and relaxing.” The core of Long Way Home reverberates deep into LaMontagne’s youth – at 21-years-old, in a small club in Minneapolis, he recalls seeing Townes Van Zandt perform live. A line from To Live Is To Fly has stuck with him ever since; Van Zandt sang, “When here you been is good an gone, all you keep is the getting there.” LaMontagne reflects, “Thirty years later it occurs to me that every song on Long Way Home is in one way or another honoring the journey. The languorous days of youth and innocence. The countless battles of adulthood, some won, more often lost. It’s been a long hard road, and I wouldn’t change a minute. It took me nine songs to express what Townes managed to say in one line. I guess I still got a lot to learn.”
Throughout 2024, Telenova have been confidently unveiling glimpses into their debut album, Time Is A Flower (August 16th) with singles Teardrop and Power – deftly combining the bands sample-driven trip-hop and disco influences with their unique brand of cinematic alt-pop.
Discothèque Inside My Head – the new single and video out now – imaginatively rewrites the script sonically and visually ahead of the album’s release, international tour, and support of Norwegian singer-songwriter Girl In Red throughout July.
Jangly electric guitars evolve into a kaleidoscope of psychedelic tinged alt-pop on Discothèque Inside My Head, setting the stage for some of Telenova’s most vivid songwriting and vocal performances yet. Frontperson Angeline Armstrong explains, “Sometimes all the noise and voices of my inner critic make me feel like I’m spinning around, lost in an overwhelming disco of light and sound inside my head. I’m discovering the key to living with that level of self-doubt and noise is learning to dance along with the discothèque”.
