Adler’s Appetite @ The Gov, Adelaide 17/5/2018
Former Guns ‘n Roses drummer and co-writer Steven Adler fires up his band Adler’s Appetite for a run of Australian shows including Adelaide at the home of live music The Gov. It was a parochial and lively group of die hard fans wanting to hear some of the best rock songs written.
There would be few artists that can say they tour with their mother who was also the support. Deanna Adler who was the author of Sweet Child Of Mine: How I Lost My Son To Guns ‘n Roses was a fascinating listen. Joined by her son Steven is was an emotive insight to the journey of being in one of the world’s biggest bands and how she kept her son alive and keep herself together. Plenty of questions were answered and the audience got to ask questions as well but you’ll need to see the show for yourself.
After a short break Adler’s Appetite returned to blow the roof off the joint. Musically, the band featured some of the best going around including singer Constantine Maroulis (finalist in American Idol), Carl Restivo (rhythm guitar), Sean McNabb (bass) and Michael Buono (lead guitar) joined by the great man himself, Steven Adler, on drums. Despite a long flight from Darwin the band were in great spirits kicking out the jams with Reckless Life. It was pretty clear that the fans wanted to hear their revered drummer play the Guns ‘n Roses hits to which they did. The crowd loved it, Adler was full of smiles and the band lifted with the energy in the room.
Gunners songs such as It’s So Easy, Nightrain and Mr Brownstone were winners with the crowd. Interestingly Constantine mentioned when they were in Hollywood last week they actually met the girl who inspired the next song on the set list My Michelle. He later commented on how much of a privilege it is playing some of the best songs ever written. Sweet Child O’Mine was a big moment in the set. The spot light was on Adler who played a killer drum solo proving he still has it and later made the statement “practice and repetition makes the master”. The crowd roared in appreciation before slowing down a tad with Civil War. You Could Be Mine and Rocket Queen were solid and make of it what you will but there’s no denying the fact that Adler’s band were really tight playing to their strengths and giving the crowd what they were coming to hear.
No doubt the band could have played longer and they did return to play two massive hits in the encore by way of Welcome To The Jungle and Paradise City. A solid show enjoyed by the masses with the majority sticking around for the paid meet and greet with their iconic drummer which went well in to the night.
