Sepultura, Death Angel, Truth Corroded @ The Gov, Adelaide 16/5/2018
Adelaide played host to metal royalty Wednesday night, as Brazilian heavyweights Sepultura came to town to grace the Gov. Supported by thrash legends Death Angel (US) and local titans Truth Corroded this promised to be a quality night for the heavy metal faithful.
Starting proceedings, Truth Corroded grab the crowd by the throat and give them a damn good shaking. With a slew of international supports this year, a label signing and a new album slated for a late 2018 release, this is a band with some serious momentum. They are a bloody talented band, and certainly making the most of every opportunity that comes their way.
Death Angel have been tearing up stages worldwide since 1982, and are acknowledged as one of the key bands in the thrash movement alongside some serious names (Metallica anyone?) As they take to the stage they declare they came to play some old school thrash, and proceed to deliver in spades. Their energy is infectious, and with a set list including Thrown To The Wolves, Claws In So Deep and Moth how could you go wrong? Long term members guitarist Rob Cavestany and vocalist Mark Osegueda look to have lost none of their edge, and the band finish their set promising to return to Australian shores again much to the crowd’s approval.
The mighty Sepultura then storm the stage, tearing into blistering opener I Am The Enemy followed by Phantom Self. With a back catalogue now consisting of fourteen albums, tonight’s set list has an excellent combination of past classics mixed with a keen focus on the band’s superb 2017 release Machine Messiah.
Crowd favourites Territory and Desperate Cry are played early, before the band pays tribute to vocalist Derrick Green’s twentieth anniversary fronting the band with a trio of tunes from their 1998 release Against.
Green cuts a formidable figure onstage, and his thunderous vocals only add to his commanding stage presence. Drummer Eloy Casagrande is surely staking his claim to be considered amongst the modern drumming elite, whilst long term members Andreas Kisser and Paulo Jr play with an intensity and energy that is irrefutable. The band’s love of performing is on display tonight, and their onstage chemistry is clear for all to see.
Closing out their set with monstrous renditions of Ratamahatta and Roots Bloody Roots to the roaring crowd, Sepultura deliver a passionate and intense performance proving to all in attendance they continue to be an incredible force to be reckoned with.
