Emma Donovan @ Dunstan Playhouse, Adelaide 20/6/2024

‘No rest til my voice is heard,’ Emma Donovan (Black Arm Band, The Putbacks) sang in her distinctive, soul-soaring voice. Tarntanya/ Adelaide had been waiting for this moment since she commenced this tour, and she did not disappoint.

The ARIA-nominated singer/ songwriter and storyteller graced the Dunstan Playhouse for the album launch of Til My Song is Done. The one-night-only Cabaret Festival performance was a gem in an exceptional 2024 program.

Transitioning back to her country roots with this album, Donovan commanded the stage in supreme glory to sing stories of Country, community and identity in her unique and effervescent spirit. Singing in Noongar and Gumbaynggirr languages, she delivered a rich musical diversity. There was much to savour. Although showcasing Til My Song is Done, Donovan, with her four-piece band, presented a mix of original and cover songs while sharing a big yarn or three.

Following the album’s title track, It’s All Over Now (Warumpi Band) brought the first taste of nostalgia. It wasn’t the last as we heard songs by and stories of Nan and Pop and her mob.

Liquid Gold was fittingly bathed in golden lighting. The ruched curtain backdrop shone as a result. I’ll Shine On You suitably followed. Away was a beautiful low-tempo number with lashings of pedal steel guitar invoking the Country sound prominent throughout Til My Song is Done.

A solo rendition of yibaanga gangaa (sweet by & by), just Donovan and her ukelele, was the first of many highlights. The traditional language song was a testament to her authentic talent.

Miracle Man and Lovin’ Looks Like increased the vibe with their energetic flavours. Then, it was time for a heartfelt ode to Uncle Archie Roach and his classic Down City Streets.

Change is Coming was a powerful and profound moment. ‘Change is coming/ I have to believe it,’ sang Donovan from the heart. Her passion was palpable. It was electric and contagious, flowing out into the cheering audience. The Promised Land, written by Donovan’s grandfather, concluded a magnetic seventy-five-minute show. The standing ovation representative of the appreciation experienced.

Emma Donovan offered the ‘biggest love’ to us last night. That love was very much felt by everyone. She furnished an exceptional performance and shared impactful stories. There was much laughter, some tears, and a lot of hope. She proclaimed she was ‘honoured to sing on this Country,’ Kaurna Country.
Emma, it was an honour to have you.
