Jazida Is The New Host Of Fringe Show ‘Smashed – The Brunch Party’

One of the tastiest daytime Fringe shows is Smashed – The Brunch Party and there’s a new host; Jazida! If you want ‘the hottest ticket in town for a world-class buffet of cabaret, exquisite drag and jaw-dropping circus’ then Grab Ya Tix! The shows on every Saturday and Sunday and the public holiday Monday from 25th Feb until 19th March at The Spiegeltent at The Garden of Unearthly Delights. Jazida chatted to HiFi way about the show.

Smashed – The Brunch Party is back again this year at Adelaide Fringe but this time with you hosting. Are you excited to be doing the show?
I am so utterly thrilled!! I’ve been part of smashed as featured guest performer and I just love it. I adore what the show stands for, I think it’s just so much fun, and I was so honored when they asked me to host!!! I truly can’t wait!

For those who haven’t heard about the show can you tell us a bit about it?
Smashed is a BRUNCH PARTY! It takes all the glamour and excitement and joy of a late night cabaret show and moves it to the morning paired with buffet brunch, and all the best brunch drinks (mimosa etc). It’s an opportunity to see some incredibly diverse artists across cabaret, drag, circus, burlesque even if you aren’t able to make it out at night.

I like to think of Smashed as a celebration of brunch. Not just brunch the “food”, but brunch the “state of mind”… Brunch is all about coming together, connection, joy… Brunch gives you permission to indulge and disregard the clock and expectations. Brunch is a place where everyone is welcome, everyone belongs (no matter what the food is, it belongs on my plate at brunch). The focus of brunch is to have a good time, and that is exactly what we want for the audience at Smashed.

How did the concept for Smashed – The Brunch Party come about?
During Covid, the Garden of Unearthly Delights found themselves in a novel programming dilemma because the turn-around times between shows had to be so long to allow time for cleaning/sanitising, and so they approached Hey Boss Productions and the team reflected on the problem and realised… DRAG BRUNCH!!! They looked at their experiences and decided they wanted the create their version of a drag brunch, that went beyond just what they’d seen in the more cis white male dominated spaces. And this is part of why Smashed has so much diversity. Not just in the artists and their backgrounds, but also in artforms (bringing in things like sideshow, circus, burlesque, etc)

Running it was such a huge success… not only for the venue working through Covid, but also for audiences… particularly those that couldn’t attend late-night shows (night shift workers, young parents, etc) – it opened a few doors around accessibility for people and that aligned so well with the values of the show, that it’s just kept running since.

There’s also an afternoon show Smashed Arvo. Is that the same show but in the afternoon?
It is the same show, still mimosa on arrival, but the afternoon shows don’t have the food service.

How long have you been performing and will you be in any other shows?
I’ve been performing since 2009 and really properly launched into the burlesque world in 2015. I will be all across Adelaide Fringe! As well as hosting Smashed, you can see my two-person theatre-burlesque show called “Catch Jazida” at the Empire Theatre in the Wonderland Speigltent Hub where I’m a burlesque thief on the loose and the audience joins the detective on the hunt. You can also catch my late-night variety show “Decadence and Debauchery” at Nineteen Ten. I’ll also be producing some pop up Decadence and Debauchery events as part of the Summer Garden Festival in Tea Tree Gully (a satellite festival during fringe). I’ll also be doing some guest spots across the festival at shows like Shake It, 007 Licence to Thrill, Bootlegger Burlesque, and more

What do you like most about the Adelaide Fringe?
I really love the immaculate vibes. I love how much joy the festival brings people. I have a tradition of driving to adelaide with my cast/crew (it’s a 14 hour drive) and that roadtrip is one of the highlights of our year. It’s a thing that so many people look forward to, that when it finally arrives, the energy is just electric! I’m very lucky to get to work with amazing people (like the Smashed Crew), and being able to reconnect with so many friends who live across the country (and the world) is just so magical.

What are three words to describe Smashed – The Brunch Party show?
