FLIGHT @ The Garden of Unearthly Delights, Adelaide 15/02/2019

Fringe show FLIGHT made its Southern Hemisphere debut Friday 15th at The Garden of Unearthly Delights. If you have seen Darkfield’s other production Séance then you will have some idea what FLIGHT is about. FLIGHT is a show staged in a shipping container where patrons are seated in a makeshift aircraft immersed into total darkness with headphones on. Being in total darkness helps heighten all other senses and to have your eyes open and see nothing but black is a calming but also at times strange sensation.

The in-flight safety video is oddly alarming that I somehow felt like I was in an episode of Lost. The sounds coming through the headphones are so precise and clear helping arouse your fears while your mind enters a state of bewilderment trying to visualise the process around you. Its intriguing, strange and exciting all at the same time. Once the darkness hits you hear babies crying, the flight attendants’ drinks cart and eerie voices testing your fear levels along with many other sounds and spoken words.

After the show I spoke to two flight attendants who happened to sit in front of me where they couldn’t contain their excitement. They loved the experience and could relate to it in many ways. I wanted the experience to be a bit more dramatic but that’s me. I prefer my scare factor is a little more extreme but having said that for the average person the fear and anxiety levels were enough to get the full effect.

Its best to experience this show without knowing too much so you get the full sensory experience. If you are claustrophobic or have a fear of the dark then this may not be a show for you. For everyone else you will love it!
