Psychedelic Porn Crumpets
Since forming in 2015 Perth natives Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have had a head spinningly busy 18 months. Not only have the psyche rockers dropped two head rattling LP’s, High Visceral Part One and Part Two to rave reviews. They have sold out both national tours and supported the likes of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, The Murlocs, Dune Rats, Black Mountain, and Skeggs. The four piece have announced a national tour including Psychedelic Porn Crumpets curated festival Dr Noggin Floggin and the Cosmic Toothbrush which brings together 12 blisteringly awesome local bands. The band answer a few questions about the tour.
I have to start off first by asking how did you come up with the name Psychedelic Porn Crumpets?
It was a branding project I started working on at Uni. My friend Tim thought it was strange and he’s a strange guy so I started writing some tunes for it!
Have you found you’ve got some interesting search results when you Google the name?
Haha I think at the start there was a few, we got a lot of weird emails as well.
How did the band get together?
Myself and the drummer Danny used to play in a band just after school. Luke I played with in a blues band called Golden Slums for a short while and Rey our bassist used to play with Bruce Springsteen. (Have photo for proof)
Do you remember the first jam sessions together and that feeling we’ve got something here?
Yeah it was really exciting. In older bands there was always someone who couldn’t keep up or we’d have to simplify parts which would ruin the song in essence. The fist jams we were only challenged by ideas, we would throw everything into the tank and see what came out.
How do you describe the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets sound to a music fan?
Sporadic, convoluted, colourful quirks that vibrantly fluctuate in a chaotic balance.
What sorts of music has influenced the band the most?
Tame Impala, The Beatles, Hiatus Kaiyote, Mangelwerzel, King Gizzard, Grizzly Bear.
What do you see as the difference between High Visceral Part 1 compared to High Visceral Part 2?
They were meant to be similar in style and fluidity. The main difference is the quality in production and the string arrangements in Part 2. We recorded drums at blackbird studio and you can hear they punch through the tracks more. The strings were composed by Ben Caddy from start to finish rather than guided in the studio and you can hear the difference in depth.
Do they go hand in hand? Do you listen to Part 1 and then play Part 2?
They’re two separate albums, you can listen individually or as a piece. They definitely flow together in style and lyrical themes but musically the ideas are different on each album.
What can music fans expect on this tour?
The High Visceral package! Us at our best and a bunch of great support acts.
What’s your most embarrassing tour story to date?
I was late to a show in Launceston because I went for a walk down the gorge and it got dark really quickly. I was halfway back along that Narnia-esque path and a possum was smack in the middle, I was terrified as he wasn’t moving and looked pretty dodgy, I had a staring contest with him for about half an hour before a bloke with a fishing rod walked over it and he didn’t even flinch, so I just closed my eyes and made a dash for it. Was late to the beer festival and then lost my phone and wallet that same night, it was an omen possum.
The band has toured with some great acts, what was it like supporting King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard?
Amazing, they’re one of the best bands in the world right now and you could tell that a few years ago. They’re really nice guys too.
Do you think you’ll need to follow in their footsteps and head overseas and slay it like the Gizz?
Hopefully! That’s the plan, would be a dream to head overseas to play.
