Olympia @ Magic Mirror Spiegeltent, Adelaide 9/3/2017
Olympia (aka Olivia Bartley) has plenty of charm to melt the hearts of millions and combined with powerful and emotive tunes she did just that. The Magic Mirror Spiegeltent is just an an awesome venue and with such majestic qualities enhancing the experience making it so much more than just an ordinary show. This show featured her debut album Self Talk and with some humorous stories it made for a quite a night. Even better still coming on at seven and being home early is a bonus.
Opening with Honey and This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things it didn’t take long for Bartley to quip “never heard such polite audience before, we never got that before” making the comparison watching Netflix and just sitting there. Somewhere To Disappear was inspired by the documentary showing the types of places adults go to hide and essentially live off the grid but deep down still wanting to be connected.
Despite a false start with the album title track Self Talk it was a flawless set (except the bit where Bartley said Adelaide is a lot like Wollongong, being good in a fight and good in a house party… hmm not sure about that!) and tunes such as Different Cities and Blue Light Disco are just stunning. The internal chaos of Smoke Signals to the prompted request for Fishing Knots Bloods Vessels was great. The only unfortunate thing was that the show had to end to the point of getting the audience to clap faster so that the band could finish the last song. Great show, definitely catch Olympia when her band tours Adelaide next time.
