Ocean Alley Celebrate 10 Years Of Debut Album ‘Lost Tropics’
Ten years ago, six mates from Sydney’s Northern Beaches released a debut album that would change the trajectory of their lives, and carve out new paths for indie bands in the Australian music scene. Lost Tropics, the first full-length record from Ocean Alley, today turns 10.
To celebrate, the band have released a three-part archival music video series, drawing on footage from the band’s early days for Pretty Little Devil, Hold On and the latest drop Feel. They’ve also announced a limited 10th anniversary vinyl repress of Lost Tropics, available exclusively via the Ocean Alley AUS webstore, shipping worldwide – two variants, each limited to 500 units, available to pre-order from 4pm today via oceanalley.com.au/merch.
Released independently on 13 May 2016 following the band’s Yellow Mellow (2013) and In Purple (2015) EPs, Lost Tropics threaded Ocean Alley’s reggae roots, psychedelic surf-rock, jazz and prog interests into a sound that was more and more feeling like their own. Recorded and mixed by Callum Howell at Jungle Studios and mastered by Steve Smart at Studios 301, the hallmarks that would go on to inspire a generation of Aussie indie rock were already fully formed across its 11 tracks: Baden’s soulful vocal drawl, the liquid guitar lines, the psychedelic undertow, the effortless swagger that sits somewhere between a sun-drenched afternoon and a late-night fever dream. From the slow-burning menace of Lemonworld to the carefree drift of Holiday and the sensuality of Partner In Crime – which later took on a life of its own when the band dueted the track with Meg Mac at triple j’s One Night Stand in 2019, now a staple of Ocean Alley’s live set.
The anniversary finds Lost Tropics sitting at over 230 million combined streams worldwide, with lead singles Holiday and Lemonworld each certified ARIA Platinum. In a testament to its staying power, the album made its way to the ARIA Australian Albums Chart when reissued for Record Store Day in June 2021 – debuting at #83 – and re-entered again in 2023, peaking at #70, speaking to the band’s ability to continue finding and connecting with new listeners.
The decade since Lost Tropics has seen Ocean Alley grow from a beloved underground act to one of Australia’s most compelling live propositions. The album’s release was immediately followed by a landmark 40-date European tour – including sold-out shows in the Netherlands and Germany – marking the beginning of an international story that would take the band to Lollapalooza, Sziget, Austin City Limits, London’s Alexandra Palace and headline shows in Central & South America. At home, the band have scaled from club rooms to open-air arenas, most recently selling more than 80,000 tickets across their 2026 Australian and New Zealand headline run.
The four albums that have followed – Chiaroscuro (2018), Lonely Diamond (2020), Low Altitude Living (2022) and most recently Love Balloon (2025) – have seen 10 singles certified Gold or higher across Australia, New Zealand and the US, with Confidence – going globally viral, twice – achieving 6x Platinum certification, culminating in a combined catalogue exceeding 1.37 billion streams.
Ocean Alley’s fifth studio album Love Balloon was released September 2025 and has now spent 32 weeks in the ARIA Australian Albums Top 10, returning to #1 for a second and third time during their national tour, and surpassing 70 million streams worldwide. A decade on from Lost Tropics, Ocean Alley are a band at the peak of their powers. Here’s to the next ten years.
