Nashville Pussy, Supersuckers, Dirty Pagans @ The Gov, Adelaide 26/1/2025
There are gigs and there are gigs! This one was totally wild and my ears are still ringing a day after. It was next level loud, Motorhead loud! Nashville Pussy’s Ruyter Suys in a recent interview with Hi Fi Way said “it’s a chance to just fucking cut loose and there’s no pretence, don’t dress up because you’re going to leave sweaty and probably covered in whiskey and or beer. This is not a fancy event, but it’s a good chance to just cut loose and like get your ya yas out.” That’s exactly what happened.
Adelaide rockers Dirty Pagans brought the heat to get the show off to a scintillating start. At this stage the crowd was still building and the one thing that you know you are going to get with these guys is entertainment and a band that leaves nothing on the stage. Their set might have been short but there was plenty of sizzle bowling over the likes of Blood Of Babylon, Down Below and Searching. There was a message to the “old fucks” in the beer garden to get down the front as they were entertaining. Dump Truck Mother was for the ladies “with some cake in the back” followed by some crowd participation with half asked to yell “super” and the other half to yell “pussy” with the back and forth combination working great. The likes of Will Know My Name and Forever High no doubt left a strong footprint and reminder to keep an eye out for their new album due sometime this year.
The legendary Supersuckers were up next and whilst they might not have a billion Spotify streams, well they should, they fly that rock flag high. Alternative rock to country rock to cowpunk front man Eddie Spaghetti says they are the greatest rock band in the band whether the rest of the world recognises this or not. There’s no pyros, no cannons, no dancers, no frills… just straight up sixty minutes of old fashioned rock which they have been doing since the “1900s”. Buckle in because this was a wild ride tearing their way through Pretty Fucked Up, All The Time, The Evil Powers of Rock ‘n’ Roll and Rock-n-Roll Records (Ain’t Selling This Year). Spaghetti thanked the crowd for coming early to catch the greatest band in the band adding they haven’t had a reprimand from the police yet.
Coattail Rider rocked and Creepy Jackalope Eye was dedicated to the “good fuckers and those who wanted to be good fuckers”. Get The Hell, Ain’t Gonna Stop (Until I Stop It) and another new one Maybe I’m Just Messing With You because “that’s what we do”. Set highlight was a cover of Heavy Heart by You Am I who are a band “we like a lot”. Metal Mikey Chandler lent his vocals to Workin’ My Ass Off, Reckless Kind and the super cool Idaho, Baby! This freight train kept barrelling along finishing in a blaze of glory on Rocket 69, Supersucker Drive-By Blues and middle fingers were up on Born With A Tail.
Nashville Pussy kicked things up a notch wasting no time at all rocking their way through the anthemic Pussy’ Not A Dirty Word. Keeping the energy, intensity and flow of the show high there wasn’t much of a pause between songs to catch your breath before ploughing through the next one. Piece Of Ass, She’s Go The Drugs was followed by front man Blaine Cartwright saying “we’re Nashville Pussy mother fuckers”. It was an old fashion rock ‘n roll sing-a-long Come On Come On that literally lifted the roof off The Gov. There is definitely a common theme that permeates through their music being songs about rock ‘n roll and the excesses of rock ‘n roll. Gonna Hitchhike Down to Cincinnati and Kick the Shit Outta Your Drunk Daddy was killer followed by “the talk” and “time to get serious” with You Give Drugs A Bad Name.
The crowd were massively in to it dancing and singing and having a swashbuckling good time. Testify was bold and Hate and Whiskey was about growing up in Kentucky. According to Cartwright his two favourite things are marijuana and BBQ so it only seemed appropriate that they played Till the Meat Falls Off the Bone on what he proclaimed as the “holiest of days” initially as Ned Kelly’s birthday then saying ‘happy Australia Day mother fuckers!” tipping VB in to his hat and going the skull the crowd cheered and even louder when they remained on stage rather than going off and back on. The last three songs Rub It To Death, Why Why Why and Go Motherfucker Go definitely tattooed the name Nashville Pussy in the minds of fans from a gig we won’t be forgetting about any time soon, Oh, my ears!
