NASHVILLE PUSSY rocked our socks off with their sold out shows on their 2022 Aussie tour, including being the last band EVER to play the iconic Frankies in Sydney – which had well over 5000 people lining the streets of Sydney’s CBD attempting to get into the club to witness the closing of the venue and Nashville Pussy!!! Was a raucous Rock n Roll night, one for the history books.

Raised on a diet of Marshall stacks, Gibson Guitars, Jack Daniels and weed, NASHVILLE PUSSY is the bastard offspring of foul-mouthed, demented, hillbilly, ice-cream man Blaine Cartwright and tractor driving, nude art school model and guitar prodigy Ruyter Suys. Ruyter talks to Hi Fi Way about the tour.

Australian tour starts Sunday, you must excited?
Hell yeah, we are. What a better place!

It seems like a real whirlwind tour with four shows in four days, that’s pretty tough going?
Yes, I agree, I would really be happy with like a week and a day off in the middle for maximum petting of Koalas and everything that every American band does. You know, like, come on, we want to play with Wallabies.

Bringing The Super Suckers with you as well, double bills don’t get any better than this do they?
Yeah, we’re excited about that, we haven’t done an actual tour with them in yikes, showing our age, fifteen plus years maybe. We did a European tour with them ages ago. We’ve had a long incestuous relationship with The Super Suckers and every incarnation that they have been and every incarnation we have been. So, it’s very, apropos that we’re all going down under finely together.

Shenanigans in Australia, perhaps?
They’re pretty fun to say the least.

So how do you work out who goes on first and last? Is it like an arm wrestle or is it rock, paper, scissors?
Eddie and I have it out. I beat the shit out of him! I told him that we didn’t want a headline!

I could see how you would win quite easily!
Oh yeah. It’s easy these days. No problem. He’s a pushover! I actually have a great photo, see if you can find it of us beating each other up. He’s actually strangling me in the picture!

Has it been tough getting through Christmas with the wait until the tail end of January to get to Australia?
A little bit, I cancelled flying home to see my parents for Christmas because I have to save up all my personal mileage and my brain for Australia. That’s the only hard part of the whole thing is the flight. It’s a common complaint again, like, my God, why are you so far away? Then I remember that England was trying to get rid of your great, great, great, great grandparents and they didn’t want them coming back! So, that makes sense!

What can fans expect on this tour?
We’ll hit some deep cuts and some of the hits, some of our underground hits. We’ve just come off of a massive European tour, so we’re a well-oiled machine right now. It’s going to be fun. We’re well rested and we’re hungry, so it’s perfect whereas if it was a month ago, I would’ve said, fuck no! Now we want a rock!

How did those shows in Europe go?
It was phenomenal. It was really, really good. It was a really, really long tour and we had no days off. It was just exhausting. It was insane. Our sound man, I don’t know how old he is, forty maybe, he’s a pup, and he said it was the hardest tour he’d ever done. He’s been in the business for fifteen years and he said it was the hardest tour he has ever done. Blaine said after doing that tour, he is like, I don’t think there’s anything I can’t do. I can do anything. So, he is like thirty hours on a plane, no problem. It was completely worth it. We had fantastic turnout in a bunch of places that we didn’t expect and in places that we’ve kind of ignored for years or just hadn’t focused on.

We honestly haven’t played clubs in Spain for quite a while and then we started hitting them again and fuck, it was great. Packed and just insane rock and rollers and great parties after our shows that we couldn’t leave because they were so good. We tried to leave, and they just kept playing good music, so we stuck around like, fuck, this is fantastic. It wound up being really good, but you had to take it one day at a time, play every show at like it’s your last and then don’t look at the calendar and see that you have like forty more!

Does anything prepare you for those rigors of touring?
To be lame we go to the gym, Blaine and I work out when we don’t want to! We go to the gym a lot. We don’t do it in like our stage clothes, that would be really serious! We’d have to go into a sauna or something like that with our cowboy boots on to really properly prepare, especially for Australia!

Is that a bit like any sort of gym membership, you get the gym membership but not the enthusiasm to go with it?
Well, the trick is to go, even if you don’t want to go, that’s to say that’s the only way you can mimic being on stage, right? Like go and just kill yourself for an hour and a half and I mean, you always feel better afterwards. Gym and or being on stage, it’s kind of like, well that was fucking great. You never leave going, oh, that was a terrible idea. It was always a good idea, and you always leave the stage feeling good. So

Are you saving the best for Adelaide? Adelaide’s the last stop on the tour.
Adelaide? Yes, of course. We don’t call it Adelaide for nothing, that’s why we’re going to blow it all up. We’re going to leave it on the stage.

How would you describe Nashville Pussy to the uninitiated?
Sheer abandoned, it’s a chance to just fucking cut loose and there’s no pretence, don’t dress up because you’re going to leave sweaty and probably covered in whiskey and or beer. This is not a fancy event, but it’s a good chance to just cut loose and like get your ya yas out. You won’t regret it and even if you did, you learned something or you don’t like to rock.
