Sienna Skies Are Set For Froth & Fury
‘Nobody remembers the guy standing in the corner with his arms crossed, enjoy it, enjoy music. If I could take anything out of it, it would be please just enjoy yourself from the set, whether you like it or not. Live music is awesome and people need to enjoy it more.’
Tom Pirozzi, vocalist in Sienna Skies says what we all feel and asks you to show it when they embark on their upcoming national tour with a stop at Froth & Fury Festival in November. Their third tour of a year that has reinvigorated the band.
‘Just before Christmas we got an email saying ‘Hey, do you want this tour?’ We were like, yeah, of course! That’s how we kicked off the start of this year with Of Mice and Men. We did four dates with them right at the start year, our first hometown show back in Sydney was at the Metro Theatre and it was insane and we were just like, it was a really fun, really quick week that was just, it was insane. We couldn’t have asked for a better comeback!’
‘Straight after that was tour number two, so we had already announced our own headlining tour, which was to be two months after that. So pretty much all of those shows we were advertising for our own tour, which worked really well and we managed to sell out all the East Coast states on that as well. It was unreal.’
A triumphant return for the band that never stopped writing and getting together however couldn’t get back on stage. Now they’re on a third tour and have a barnstorming EP, Only Change Is Permanent, on display and the feedback has been incredible.
‘We’re going to be playing every track off the new EP. Those songs have been resonating so well and people love them, so we want to play them. It’s a weird thing for a band to be able to play all their newer stuff and get a better reception to that than some of the ones that people grew up singing. So, it’s very humbling’
If the band have their groove on, writing and touring, will this ignite them to strike while the iron is hot with more new music?
‘Yeah, a hundred percent actually. A few weeks ago we went down to Melbourne and we did a little bit of songwriting with Callum from Dream On Dreamer. He’s a really good producer, really good engineer and a good friend. He offered his services and we were glad to, we were always going to oblige. We’ve always been interested in jumping in with somebody else just to see how other people were. We’ve never done that before, so it was really interesting. We’re really looking forward to what we can start churning out after that. To answer your question, yes it does a hundred percent ignite that flame a little bit more. It stops that second guessing. We spent all those covid years just being like,’ Hey, are people going to still listen to heavy music in four years time’ or however long it took us to pull our socks up?’
The response to the bands return has been noticeable, not just by themselves, and Pirozzi has some kind words for an often-maligned market, Adelaide.
‘Pre-Covid there was this weird sort of preconception that Adelaide doesn’t sell tickets and all this sort of stuff and we didn’t see that at all when we came down to Lion Arts and it was almost sold out with Of Mice and Men. That room was full, it was bonkers. Then the same night we came down for our headliner, our friends in Ocean Sleeper were playing at Lion Arts and we played at the Cranker and we were both sold out. So, it just sort of goes to show – I’m so glad – that there is now a festival down in Adelaide because for so long you’ve been getting the rough end of the stick by not being able to get festivals and stuff like that. It’s really cool.’
The bands own headline tour features Americans Of Virtue and Melbourne’s Clay J Gladstone, a musical cocktail of a line up
‘We’ve known the guys in Clay J for.. I went to school with a couple of the guys. We’ve always just sort of knocked around together over the years in different bands and stuff like that. They’re killing it at the moment. Their new record comes out the same week that we start the tour. I love that band. It’s so frantic, it’s so fun. They’re going to be a handful, I’m a little bit worried! Then Of Virtue, we’ve actually been friends with their manager for quite a while and they’ve been hassling us for a little bit as to whether we would ever be able to bring ’em out. This is that chance and they’re absolutely killing it at the moment. So after our tour they go straight back to the States and they’re doing a full US tour with Ghost Inside. They’re doing so well at the moment. We’re really excited for them to get out.’
Which brings us back around to what expect at the show which started this transcript.
‘You can expect a lot of sweaty blokes that act like teenagers in their mid thirties. That’s probably the best way that I can describe it. We haven’t changed a bit. We’ve got a lot of energy, we’ve got a lot of sing-a-longs and yeah, we just hope that everybody’s sort of there to have a bit of a bop!’
