Jorja Smith, Beckah Amani @ Hindley Street Music Hall, Adelaide 10/10/2024
Jorja Smith brought Hindley Street Music Hall to life last night. The crowd was electric, the vibes were spectacular and Jorja was simply brilliant.
The UK R&B sensation was supported by Beckah Amani, a young artist currently based in the Gold Coast. You could pick up on Beckah’s musical influences as she seamlessly blended genres, giving us deep heart-felt songs one moment and absolute bops the next.
She performed beautiful songs she’s penned over the last couple of years such as Superstar, Waiting On You and Tread Lightly.
Making sure to involve the audience, there was lots of clapping and a little choreography to go along with the track I Don’t Know Why I Don’t Leave You. It was fun to watch the audience completely out of time as she encouraged us to wave our arms on beat, but the most important part was that we were collectively trying and having a laugh trying to execute it.
My favourite song was Standards, which leaned into a very vulnerable Beckah. She claimed this was her most personal song, but I won’t be able to do it justice here. Go and have a listen and experience this for yourself to get a glimpse inside of her heart and mind – you might also find yourself reflecting on a thing or two.
After a brief interval, it was time for Jorja Smith to begin her ninety minute set. Walking out to Try Me the screams were so overpowering, she could hardly be heard. There was so much excitement as until now, Jorja hadn’t hit Australian soil to tour since 2019.
There were fans from all ages eager to hear her biggest hits, and that’s exactly what they got. We certainly didn’t expect Blue Lights so early, her debut single from all the way back in 2016.
From her latest album Falling or Flying which was released in September of last year she treated us to songs such as Broken Is The Man, Feelings (featuring J Hus) and Greatest Gift before taking us back to her Lost & Found days.
She certainly saved some of the best until last, as we all belted out the words to Teenage Fantasy, Be Honest and On My Mind – classics from the late 2010’s.
Wrapping up the show on an absolute high, it only made sense to close her set with Little Things, a song that took off massively on social media upon release.
The 27-year old singer songwriter from the West Midlands put on an Adelaide show to remember, taking us back to our teens and putting us in our feels.
Jorja Smith will be heading to Sydney on 15 October to finish her Australian tour. I truly believe her stunning voice needs to be heard live to be truly appreciated and understood. Don’t miss out!
