Presley Davis Jr’s ‘Eclecta Trifecta’…
A sentimental jazz song, a country ode to heartache and a sultry soul gem collide in another trifecta single release from singer-songwriter, actor and creative cauldron Presley Davis Jr. Balancing various genres across his brand new tracks, Heart of My Heart, Showdown and Convincing Me, all out now, Presley’s eclectic prowess grows to new heights as he steps ever-closer to the upcoming release of three simultaneous albums; Roadside Magnolia, Torana Americana and Birdlife, with these albums forming into the amalgamated Eclecta Trifecta collective, due out on July 23.
Kicking off in swoon city, Presley’s first new single out now, Heart of My Heart, doles out the charm with ambling brass and tinkling keys as Presley effortlessly channels classic jazz with hints of barbershop charm throughout. A time-travelling delight that hastens you back to the golden age of Bing Crosby and poetic lyricism, Heart of My Heart also beckons another snapshot into Presley’s upcoming full length album Roadside Magnolia dropping this July as part of the Eclecta Trifecta project. Presley tells Hi Fi Way more.
How has the build-up been leading up to the release of the Eclecta Trifecta project?
The singles have been received well so that is pretty exciting. Overall, as a one man operation it is hectic managing a project this large. I am having fun at times but also pulling my hair out some days.
Three albums in three different genres must have been quite the undertaking?
It was one of those big ideas where you think “That would really be something”. However the logistics of pulling it off have been hard. I recorded them in succession which made it a bit easier to focus on what each album needed. Sustaining the drive to finish it was the hardest part and I’m grateful to those who kept encouraging me.
Was the process of making your three albums as challenging as you thought?
It was more challenging than I thought because of some unexpected issues. The actual recording was only difficult at first because I had to learn so much. By the third record I was at ease and enjoying myself in my home studio. Mixing and mastering is a dark art, but I have people I trust in place now for future projects.
Sonically, how would you describe your music?
Well each record is “in character” for the style of music it is. Torana Americana is a country record that leans a bit more bluegrass (just like my parents); Birdlife is a collection of soul music with touches of blues, funk, and even one disco-inspired track; Roadside Magnolia is a New Orleans style jazz record drawn from a lifetime infused with that music.
Who would you consider to be the biggest influence on your music and why?
Probably my father who owned a little music shop in the small town I grew up in. I was exposed to a lot of traditional Americana and roots music and my house was filled with instrument cases. Being surrounded by that can’t help but have an impact.
Best piece of advice you have been given?
Don’t take any drugs that people make in their sink or a ‘lab’.
What is the “Presley Davis Jr” life story?
I was born very young indeed. I grew up in Bloomington, Illinois which is known for insurance and a snack called ”Beer Nuts”. My family is very musical, and they were really into bluegrass when I was a toddler. My father became obsessed with tenor banjos and early jazz when I was about eight and I spent my entire childhood trying to get onstage and sing with him. I ended up becoming a full time vocalist, and landed my first six night a week contract at seventeen years old. I toured around with different bands until I was about twenty five then met my Australian wife while she was traveling in the USA and it was love at first sight. I moved to Melbourne Australia, became a citizen, and have been singing and playing in bands here for the last twenty years. This third album release is my debut solo project.
Are you looking to tour more broadly?
I would love to perform in festivals and venues around Australia. I might do some gigs in the USA after that.
What’s next for you?
I will continue to make albums in different styles because I like the idea of challenging myself. I won’t limit myself to that, but I think it’s healthy to stretch your boundaries and amuse yourself creatively. Especially in today’s industry where there is little concern for the livelihood of the average musician. Might as well do what you like, and set some goals for yourself.
Who’s your favourite Adelaide artist/group at the moment?
I really like the Yearlings, they write catchy songs and produce great sounding records, inspirational stuff. I work with and know a lot of Melbourne-based musicians who are originally from Adelaide, it’s crazy how many talented people come from that town.
