Sarah Blasko & Cub Sport Release New Remix Of ‘Flame Trees’

It’s hard to believe that 2024 marks almost 20 years since Sarah Blasko released her cover of Flame Trees, and 40 years since Cold Chisel released the original version.

Originally recorded for the film Little Fish, Sarah’s version is arguably as ubiquitous as the original now – with her signature vocals and the slowed down, sparse production of Jim Moginie and Wayne Connolly adding a whole new dimension to Don Walker and Steve Prestwich’s creation.

To celebrate the song and it’s resurgence – thanks to placement in the closing scene of Heartbreak High Season 2 on Netflix – Sarah has collaborated with Cub Sport to release a new remix version of the track.

Taking the ethereal nature of Sarah’s version and adding new production, Cub Sport have added another layer of history to the story of this classic Australian song.

On working with Cub Sport, Sarah said “They were the perfect choice to remix my version of ‘Flame Trees’ as I celebrate its anniversary & the new life it’s been given in pride of place on ‘Heartbreak High’. They’re such beautiful musicians.”

“We originally met on an APRA Song Hubs camp, where I had the chance to work with both Tim & Zoe. Tim & I wrote ‘Give It To Me (Like You Mean It)’ from their album ‘Bats’ at that very camp!”

Tim from Cub Sport on their inspiration for the remix: “This song was placed so beautifully in the recent second season of Heartbreak High and the vision for the remix was to capture the feeling of the slowed warpy version used in the opening sequence of episode one. Our remix is like a spacious grand ethereal dreamy version with some gentle trip hop nods.

Talking about Sarah and her inspiration on the band, Tim added; “This year is the 20th anniversary of Sarah’s album The Overture & the Underscore which is an album that I listened to many times in my childhood bedroom. It’s really surreal to get to be part of celebrating this release.”

Sarah added; “They’re such genuine, sweet & talented people with their hearts in the right musical place, so it’s wonderful to hear them breathe new life into something that has been such a big part of my musical history. People are always shouting out for me to “play Flame Trees” at my shows, & I take it as a huge compliment – it’s such a well-loved song.”
