The Terrys, Le Shiv @ Lion Arts Factory, Adelaide 24/4/2024
ANZAC Day public holiday eve and with no need to go to work it was a great idea to head out and take in some live music at Lion Arts Factory. It was a big crowd that assembled to see The Terrys who are riding high at the moment having toured Europe then New Zealand. Even with the grind of touring and the potential for it all to catch up with them that was pushed aside once they took the stage.
Le Shiv were a top choice as a support for the tour and no doubt they set the bar high for any band that follows them. I would even go as far as saying they are genuinely one the most exciting Australian band’s on the rise at the moment and having seen them a couple of times now that belief has been confirmed. Now is the time for this five piece indie/ alt/ rock/ psych-pop band to continue that rise, they have great tunes and the rest of the world needs to hear about it. They wear their influences on their sleeve but they are unique and there’s plenty to like. Set highlights included Something I Said, No Freak, Trouble, I’m Fine, I’ve Said Too Much, But How Are You? and Where’s My Money.
If it wasn’t sold out it would have been incredibly close as finding the best vantage point came at an absolute premium. As The Terrys lead singer Jacob Finch said, they represent the outcasts and their infectious, fun and free spirited vibe is the allure that reels in their fans. With new album Skate Pop in the back pocket there was plenty to come from it. Taking the stage to plenty of cheers and raucous noise the band launched in to new tune Head Noise. From there Zombie, Cost The Peace and crowd favourite Hopscotch followed. Finch opened with the line “We’re your best-est friends The Terrys from New South Wales”.
More from the new album in Fundamental Man, Clouds, Silent Disco and Daisy’s Drop played acoustically and enhanced with indoor fireworks. Back to familiar territory with Penny then new tunes Favourite Place, prefaced with the comment that they will never ever forget Adelaide, and Imaginary Friend. The crowd was excitable and knew all the words, even all the songs off the new album. Stopping towards the end of Our Paradise is was unfortunate to hear about some push and shove going on down front with the band telling one punter in particular to “chill out, where’s the love? You’re at a Terrys show”.
Skate Pop got a good airing with Troopy, No Bad Days and Tokyo to come. One lucky junior fan was lucky to be on the shoulders of Finch rocking out to Tokyo. It was also at this point Finch took a moment to reflect on their journey and touring overseas suggesting they were tired and thanking everyone for coming along promising to be back soon. Finishing on a classic Terrys tune Pesos which morphed in to Pesos on steroids. The chant for one more song started with the band returning to pull a song from The TerrySonic Mixtape with Blue to bring the house down one last time. Solid night, keep an eye out on Le Shiv.
