Tom Gleeson – Gear @ The Vagabond At The Garden Of Unearthly Delights, Adelaide 22/2/2024

Tom Gleeson’s Gear at Adelaide Fringe 2024 is a whirlwind of laughs, but whether it hits the mark depends on your generational viewpoint.

From the get-go, Gleeson’s energy fills the room. He’s got this deadpan delivery that hits you just right, and he doesn’t hold anything back. He’s all about poking fun at life’s little quirks and absurdities, and man, does he do it well. Now, fair warning, Gleeson’s humour can be a bit edgy. He’s not afraid to go there, but it’s all in good fun, and honestly, that’s what makes it so great.

Gleeson humorously addresses his transition from appealing to an older demographic to now targeting a younger crowd in their 40s due to his older fans dying. As someone who fits into this new ‘younger’ demographic, I found Gleeson’s jokes relatable and on point. However, my 18-year-old son who attended with me, had a different take. Gleeson’s references to past pop culture icons like Russell Brand and Bill Cosby left my son feeling a bit lost. Even Gleeson’s impression of Fat Albert fell flat, as my son had no frame of reference for the character.

Ultimately, my son rated the show a two out of five stars, citing the disconnect caused by the references that went over his head. For me, though, Gleeson’s comedic prowess shone through, earning the show a strong four stars. While it started with a bang and dipped slightly in the middle, it bounced back with gusto, delivering laughs aplenty.

Overall, if you’re up for a night of laughs, Gear is where it’s at. Gleeson’s wit, charm, and no-holds-barred approach to comedy make for one heck of a show. Whether his humour resonates with you, depends heavily on your generational perspective.
