Stephen K Amos – Oxymoron @ The Box at The Garden of Unearthly Delights, Adelaide 18/2/2024

British stand-up comedian Stephen K Amos took aim at just about everything Aussie, including their beloved Vegemite.

Stephen K Amos has kicked off the Australian leg of his new tour Oxymoron at The Garden of Unearthly Delights. Touching on big headlines from the past few years, Stephen referenced life after the pandemic, the shambles that has been the British government and the world going near on cashless.

Known for involving the audience in his shows, he encouraged feedback from the get-go and loosened everyone up early on. ‘Any Nigerians in here tonight?’ he asked. ‘Long shot.’ he responded, after a prolonged radio silence. ‘Any members of the LGBTQI+ community?’ he pleaded. Again, no show of hands, no response. Until one audience member was quick to shout, ‘you’re it!’ Stephen was caught off guard and left in hysterics with the rest of the room in tears. Hardly able to carry on, he complimented the man, saying he’ll certainly be using that in his next show. Stephen continued to highlight and poke fun at the lack of diversity amongst the crowd and across Adelaide with unfortunate but relatable truths.

Having first come to Adelaide twenty years ago and visiting ever since, Stephen was comfortable enough and not afraid to mimic the Aussie accent. He did not hold back in calling out ‘bogans’ and even dropping the occasional c-bomb. At one point he praised the crowd for being more intelligent than the people he had the previous night, stating they had looked like ‘something out of a David Attenborough documentary.’

Often delivering self-contradicting jokes and one-liners, he purposely sprinkled clever oxymorons throughout the show that had the whole crowd laughing. His performance was well thought out and lots of fun. It was a great opportunity to see this internationally known comedian and TV personality in the flesh.

Don’t be fooled by his sweet smile and charming London accent… Stephen K Amos is here, ready to rip you apart for the next two weeks. If you are able to laugh at yourself and don’t take offence easily, you will LOVE this show.
