Fringe Favourite Tash York Returns to Gluttony With New Show ‘Love That For You’
It’s not the Adelaide Fringe without Tash York and once again this Gluttony favourite is returning with a new show Love That For You. We do love that for you because not only is York bringing a new show she’s also performing in two others; Swamplesque and MC for Best of the Best Cabaret show.
Tash York answered some questions for Hi Fi way and the new show sounds like a winner! Let’s not forget for her last show where she won at the Adelaide Fringe Weekly Award – Best Cabaret Award for Happy Hour.
Your show Love That for You is debuting at this year’s Adelaide Fringe at Gluttony. What can Adelaide audiences expect when you bring the show here?
You all know I bloody love Adelaide Fringe – it’s my favourite! I haven’t been back with a solo show since 2022 so I’m super pumped to be back in full force with this new show. I’m bringing the fabulous Red Red Wines (Vivian Fonteyn and Peppy Smears) and we have written a completely original soundtrack for the show! I’ve been working with the Wines for a few years now, so it’s really exciting creating a show together and getting to make not only a hilarious show but one that is musically impressive that we have written from scratch. They’re very talented and young so it’s been super inspiring for me, or maybe I’m just treating them like the youth vial from Death Becomes Her…. You choose!
Can you tell us a bit about Love That for You?
I have always found the concept of people saying “Love that for you” very interesting. There are so many ways it can be interpreted. Do you actually hate it? Do you genuinely love it for me? It’s all about the intention. There is an aspect of it we love, because you find people who love to hate the same things you do. I’m in my mid thirties now, yes I know I only look twenty, and I have found over the last few years reflecting about how I have made the life I have for myself. There are a lot of things people expect from women in their mid thirties, and now more than ever women are finding themselves with the freedom to be exactly who they want to be. Did I think when I was twenty that I’d be a childless drag queen who performs cabaret and owns three cats, absolutely not! This show assesses some of those turning point moments of my life like when I was engaged at nineteen or working as a call centre manager and trying to assess what would have happened if I’d confirmed to everyone else’s “better judgement”/ judgement I got for going after what I really wanted.
You always seem to come up with new and exciting shows each time for the Fringe circuit. How do you keep your content new and fresh?
I like to write about what’s happening in the world and try to reflect that to my audiences. All of my shows are autobiographical too, so usually the content comes to me and then I try to do some research with friends and online to try and discuss if those themes are relevant to others. I wrote Adulting my break out show nearly ten years ago now, and when I brought it back in 2022, I realised that there are definitely some things that were unresolved in that show for me now. I try my hardest to distill into a one hour cabaret what it’s like to just exist in the world, and I think that’s why I connect with audiences because I make it not just about me but to reflect as many of us as possible.
Are you excited to be a part of the Adelaide Fringe again especially at Gluttony as its like your Fringe home away from home?
Yes of course! Love my gluttony fam! I’ve been performing in gluttony since 2015… yikes! Back then it was maybe five tents and you could walk from one end to the other in two minutes, now it’s almost spanning over a kilometre long with about fifteeen venues, one of which holds over one thousand people. It’s amazing to be apart of something that is growing, just as I have been. We are like a family and I’m excited to be apart of not only this show this year, but making my Adelaide burlesque debut in Swamplesque as Princess No.3 and also as the MC for Best of The Best cabaret too. These extra shows are all from performers that have been part of this Gluttony fam too, and I just love coming back year after year.
Lastly, what are three words to describe your show Love That for You?
Relish your life!
