Baby Candy On New EP ‘Candy Sucker’
BABY CANDY is a Kaurna Land (Adelaide), South Australia band playing 70s riff rock dosed up with 90s fuzz tones. Featuring Brenton Wilson on vocals/guitar (Rocky’s Pride & Joy), Fraser Ray (Sleep Talk, I, Exalt), Sam Szabo and Michael Belletti (Sleep Talk). After playing around Kaurna since 2019 and releasing some initial singles, this is BC’s first release as a four piece and a hint of the group looking to step up their activity in 2024.
The four tracks flex Baby Candy’s ability to touch many genres while creating a sound all their own, first track Candy Sucker is a glammy groover akin to a toughened up T Rex. Second track Big Boi is an Amyl and the Sniffers meets FUZZ burner. Third track What’s Worse is a slower, more alt rock hit that features both delicate & fiery guitar work. Finally, final song Riffy Ponting showcases the band jump from psych rock to stoner to straight rolling riffs. Sam Szabo answers a few questions about their new EP.
How exciting was the build up to the release to your EP Candy Sucker?
It had been a longtime coming to release new music, two of these songs were close to 5 years old or so, two were more recent so we have been itching to complete some kind of body of music. Keen to do another EP as soon as possible!
How was the launch at The Grace Emily Hotel?
The launch at The Grace couldn’t have gone better! Both Baby Teeth and The 745 have members still in high school, they are already streets ahead and a couple bands to watch closely. Ethanol Blend had those in the audience crowd surfing and honestly made use a little nervy to play our set….But we did just fine, in fact our best show to date I’d say, at least from a crowd response.
Sonically, how would you describe Baby Candy?
Baby Candy sounds like if these three styles were each a type of egg; late 60s power rock, 90s alternative and 2010s garage revival, then beating them together and them onto a hot but new, fresh pan for a kind of big rock omelette.
How did the band meet?
Most of us originally met watching front man Brenton Wilson’s other band called Jungle City around town over the years. But more or less, we have all been friends for years and have been added to the group when the opportunity has arisen.
What was the energy like in those initial jam sessions?
Well funnily enough, originally Brenton used to sing and play drums and so it would be Fraser (guitar) and myself (bass). I joined having never performed and played an instrument in a band setting and thankfully the other were very patient in letting learn the ropes one song at time at the first practice, then two at the second practiced and so on until we had a thirty minute set.
Who are some of the biggest musical heroes for Baby Candy?
Cliff Richard and The Buggles primarily and then Black Sabbath, Ty Segall eventually.
How did you come up with the name Baby Candy?
I believe Brenton came up with it way back in 2017 or 2018 and just appreciated the phonetics of those two words together, kind of just fun to say.
Are there plans for more new music in 2024?
We have a lot demoed material, we would love to do another EP this year.
Is the band playing more shows over the summer?
Next show is in March with some old and new friends at a CBD pub mentioned earlier.
What’s next for Baby Candy?
We are in the midst of planning our first set shows outside South Australia, a tour run thanks to a friends band that are taking us out into the world.
