The Killers Celebrate 20 Years of Debut Single ‘Mr. Brightside’ Tomorrow

Tomorrow, The Killers will celebrate 20 years of their debut single Mr. Brightside. Originally released on September 29, 2003, the single served as the band’s debut taken from the ‘Hot Fuss’ album.
Certified 17x Platinum in Australia (substantially higher than any other territory globally), Mr. Brightside has garnered a reputation as a true floor-filler, growing in increments over the ensuing two decades. It can still be found in the Top 40 ARIA Singles Chart – peaking at #23 in January 2022 – and is the longest-running track on Spotify’s Top Songs Australia at 352 weeks straight.
In Australia, the track has been key to many cultural moments. It has appeared in three triple j Hottest 100 countdowns: firstly at #13 in 2004, then at #38 in 2009’s Hottest 100 of All Time poll, and then again at #7 in 2013 for the Hottest 100 of the Past 20 Years.
Performing as the post-game entertainment at the 2017 AFL Grand Final, The Killers’ performance has gone down in history as one of the best (Top 10 AFL Grand Final Music Performances, The Music 2022). In a somewhat unscripted moment, Richmond Tigers forward Jack Riewoldt joined The Killers on stage for Mr. Brightside after their victory. The moment spread across the country, reinforcing the song as a genuine anthem for the ages.
A true cultural phenomenon – we’re proud to mark this birthday – Des-tin-y Is Calling Us!
