Big Beats By Adam Page @ The Pyramid at Fool’s Paradise, Adelaide 2/3/2023
The greatest one-man band in South Australia is back!
Multi-instrumentalist Adam Page returns to the Adelaide Fringe with another stellar multi-genre musical performance.
Armed with his looper pedal, he ascends The Pyramid stage at Fool’s Paradise, enthusiasm brimming. Page’s unassuming nature conceals a phenomenal musical talent. In addition to being a multi-instrumentalist, he is a record producer and composer. All these skills entwine in BIG BEATS to create an hour of exceptional music and a lot of laughs.
The premise of BIG BEATS is simple. Page has chosen a handful of his favourite musical BIG BEATS, from which he composes an original piece. He uses instruments, some common, others obscure, and his infamous looping skills, to treat the audience to unique renditions of classic beats and some uncommon ones.
From Leon Chancellor and his drum beat on Billie Jean (Michael Jackson) to Skull Snaps, It’s a New Day, you never know what Page will pull out of his metaphorical hat. But it is sure to be damn good.
Despite the performance being structured with its beat choices, Page adopts a trial-and-error approach with his compositions. Sometimes they work. Other times they don’t. However, he is confidently calling out the errors. This highlights his authenticity and the whimsical nature of the show.
At heart, Page is a music nerd. Witnessing this emerge on stage as he explains the 15/8 beat concerning the Incredible Bongo Band’s Apache is endearing. His passion for his craft is undeniable. This quality, and his overall casualness, produces a notable show each time he performs.
BIG BEATS with Adam Page is a wildly entertaining ride with a musical virtuoso. Full of lush beats and incredible talent, it is one to tell your friends about.
