Here We Are @ The Breakout at The Mill, Adelaide 22/2/2023

“ Here We Are by Emma Beech is a fascinating and beautiful improvisational performance”

I have been very impressed with Emma after seeing her perform two completely different roles in Jasper Jones for our State Theatre Company in 2019 and her own show last year called The Photo Box for the Adelaide Festival. Emma has been performing highly rehearsed shows for seventeen years. This show is a departure from that. The show starts off with Emma reading from a notebook and within a minute she closes the book and from that time on she feeds off the audience to create her show much like an improv stand up comic would do at the start of their show.

Emma involves most of the audience and talked to us directly. The interactions led her to tell us many interesting stories about her life. Her discussion about her time in Denmark was fascinating and her marriage proposal story was beautiful. I would imagine that each night would be different. I also loved hearing about her childhood in the Riverland as well as hearing about her 8-year triplets and the part about inappropriate swearing. Before too long the show was over and although it went for the advertised show length it seemed really short which is an excellent indicator of a great show.

I hope Emma has a successful run at this year’s Fringe and thank you for the Arnotts vegan Raspberry Shortcake biscuit, it was delicious! I can not wait to see what her next show will be.
