How has the lead up been to the new single When Everybody Is Sleeping?
I have been itching to have this release out for a while! I wrote it a year ago and have been gigging with it ever since. I’d often get asked about the song after a show, so I am pumped to finally have it out in the world to share with you.
What is the story behind the single?
I wrote this song as an escape – a catharsis from 2020/21. It takes me back to the streets of my hometown in rural Victoria, where my friends and I would meet up for late night adventures, walking or driving up to a lookout on a local hill to sit in the dark and chat about anything and everything. It was in those moments I really felt completely free of any pressure or responsibility that might have brought me down day to day. Capturing this feeling really helped me through this past year. It’s been rough, hey.
Do you get nervous thinking about what the fan response might be?
100% I get nervous! So much work goes into writing, recording and releasing a single song and it is a bit gut-wrenching to think about people not liking it! However, I’m making music that means a lot to me and I think people are drawn to the authenticity when artists are obviously doing something they love. I’m so incredibly grateful for my supportive fans!
How would you compare it sonically to some of your other music?
This track was co-produced with Ryan Mangold in our home studio – like my 2020 EP. We’ve learnt SO much since we first started producing around two years ago, and I’m so proud of the sound we’re achieving now. When Everybody Is Sleeping is definitely a lot groovier than my previous work – I love the bassline (played by Ryan) and the airy pre-choruses.
Are you building towards and album or EP?
EP #2 is on the go!!
Does the music come before the lyrics?
Ah, the chicken or the egg. Music. Lyrics. Both. This song started with the ‘and I breath in, I breath out’ section in the pre-chorus, both lyrics and melody.
Who would you say is the biggest musical influence/ inspiration is for Kitty Rae?
I’d like to thank Lana Del Rey for raising me in my adolescence. I have been listening to basically every song of hers that is available out there (released and unreleased) and it’s what made me fall in love with song writing. I also love Dolly Parton – as an artist and as a human. I want to be a star like her – kind to everyone she meets and so generous with giving back to the community. She’s my biggest role model.
Did you lose much momentum last year due to the pandemic?
I don’t know about you, but I definitely found the past 3-6 months the hardest period of 2020/21 – ‘period of the unprecedented’. I just finished my last assessments for my Music Performance degree at Monash University and had really thought I’d get the chance to get back on campus to mingle with my peers and maybe do some performances. No such luck. I am grateful for the silver lining though – I’ve always been a busy bee and this period has given us all a lot of free-time to dedicate to things we love or haven’t been able to do. I made a lot of music that wouldn’t have come to life otherwise. I started therapy and that’s been life-changing for me. I think we were all forced to confront darker parts of ourselves in the past few years, and I hope that makes us stronger.
Are you looking forward to being able to tour more broadly around the country this year?
Heck yes! Come dance with me at a gig sometime soon!
What’s next for Kitty Rae?
I really want to do festivals. I just got my band together and I’m pumped to do more performances as an all-female/non-binary group. Other than that, it’s all systems go to record and release my next EP. Hope you’re ready.
