On Sahara Beck’s stunning new single Kryptonite, doing the wrong thing has never sounded so right. Served up in a cocktail glass of sparkly pop and gleaming synth, it’s a seductive shot of decadence and denial, chased down with hard truths and candid confessions.
Produced by ARIA Award-nominated studio extraordinaire Tony Buchen (Mansionair, Courtney Barnett), it’s also Sahara’s most personal song to date. At its heart, it’s about running from reality rather than facing it and diving into the vices we all know and wrestle with.
“Got no money but I’m spending it, I keep smoking but I gotta quit, I got no will power, I’m nothing but a coward” Sahara declares early in the song.
“I realised I was doing a lot of bad things to avoid feeling and processing what I was going through at the time,” she reveals. “Instead, I was always dancing, always smiling, trying to make other people feel good. I didn’t want to take anything seriously because that means dealing with it. Then you soon realise you’re falling in love with the things that are slowly killing you.”
It’s a powerful message for a pop song and one that you can easily miss on first listen – after all, Kryptonite sounds so damn joyous and vibrant and fun. But that’s always been Sahara’s gift – to spin sadness into bliss, weakness into wonder.
Kryptonite arrives as the latest highlight in a career already bursting with them. It follows the release of her most recent single Crave Me which received radio support across the globe including influential stations such as Flux FM Germany; Indie XFM Los Angeles; Radio Doble Nueve Peru; 2XM Ireland; Radio Alternative Rock Brazil, Radio One India and ZFM Netherlands. Asia Pop 40 have interviewed the likes of John Legend and Justin Bieber and their audience is in the millions broadcasting to 100+ radio stations across SE Asia, Asia, Middle East, Australasia and North America.
Kryptonite comes off the back of her International collaboration with Purple Disco Machine.
