Smoking Martha Talk ‘Liquid Sunshine’

Following on from the fired up Good Girls single release in May, Brisbane four piece Smoking Martha serve up another dose of slick rock music in new track, Liquid Sunshine. The song is another prime example of the band’s dynamism: from Natasha Doherty’s powerful vocals, through to the band’s hold on arrangement and production. The way Smoking Martha work together has bred some impressive music over the years and now, with two of their strongest releases to date out in the ether, the Brissy group have taken one strong stride forward. With Liquid Sunshine, Smoking Martha were back on the tools at Studio Circuit with producers Matt Bartlem and Luke Palmer to work on the new material. With Bartlem also on mixing and mastering duties, Smoking Martha galvanised their work as artists and producers with a veritable dream team.

Taken from the forthcoming new Smoking Martha album, Liquid Sunshine provides a strong insight into the sounds dictating the band’s next full record of material. The band has been working with the prolific Mark Opitz (AC/DC, Divinyls, INXS) on what is set to be their most definitive set of work yet. Natasha Doherty answers some questions about the single and what’s next for the band.

Congratulations on the new single Liquid Sunshine, is there a sense of relief that it’s done, dusted and finally?
It was definitely exciting to finally release it and share it to the world!!

How challenging has it been for the band working on new music?
There’s definitely been a change in dynamic, since we haven’t been able to play many shows this past year but it’s been a good opportunity to write and re-group!!

What’s the story behind the song?
Liquid Sunshine is the love of the sea, the sun and the memories of young love over an endless summer !!

What was it like working with Mark Opitz?
We haven’t actually worked with Mark as yet but we are looking forward to in future. Matt Bartlem produced this song and whole album!!

What do you think he brings to the table that other producers might not be able to?
Matt Bartlem is probably one of the best in Australia at this time, his overall production quality is world class, he has an amazing ear and is very challenging and therefore brings out the best in our performances!! Mark optitz as you all know is an absolute legend in the Australian rock industry, his history producing some of the best and many of our idols has given us complete faith and excitement to work with him in future.

Have you been able to work on more music?
Always excited to get back into the studio!!

Are there plans for a new album or EP this year?
Our brand new album Universe will be released on December 3 this year through Xelon Entrainment!!

Do you think the band’s sound has changed?
We have definitely evolved naturally, but we continue to write very true to ourselves so the music stays organic.

How exciting will it be to get the greenlight to start touring again?
We love touring and can’t wait to get back to the UK especially as we have had a lot of love and interest from over there!!!

What’s something that no one knows about Smoking Martha?
We do the Mighty ducks chant quack before every show!!

What’s next for the band?
New music, more shows and world domination !!
