Loose End

Melbourne rockers Loose End are incredibly apt when it comes to toeing the thrilling line between pop punk and metalcore, and they return with the credentials to prove it in new single Discontent. Discontent is a candid look in to the experience of burnout and its effect on the enjoyment of success – something rife within the creative industries. The band answer a few questions about their new single.

How has the response to your new single Discontent been?
The response has been awesome! I know it’s a cliché, but we feel it’s a real progression for us. Definitely sets the tone for the next EP.

Was the process of making this track as challenging as you thought?
I wouldn’t say it was challenging, but we did have to put a lot more work into than it I thought we would. Personally, finding the narrative was the most difficult part. I was trying to force one rather than speaking truthfully. Once I found it, everything just spilled out.

Sonically, how would you describe your music?
I think I would describe it as the bridge between pop-punk & metalcore. Individually we can all hold our own, but together is when we are all at our best. We have punk rock energy, think guitars melodies and charged vocals. Jackson our drummer was able to experiment a lot more with this track and I feel he is the real stand out.

Lyrically I will quote our bass player jack because I think he does it best. – “It’s thematically reflective and introspective: Understanding oneself and becoming okay with who we are as people and the things we’ve done is at the heart of our music.”

Who would you consider to be the biggest influence on your music and why?
Personally, I think it’s all the guys in Loose End. Being around them really inspires me. We all have very different influences and tastes, I always love our writing process as everyone’s mind works in a different way. You never know what is going to come next.

Best piece of advice you have been given?
Find someone you idolise and figure out what they do wrong.

How did the band get together?
I was writing an EP for a project and Jackson came on board about a week before we recorded. Saving my ass. From there Jackson slowly brought on board all the other guys. It was a really natural process and luckily we are all really great friends now.

What’s on your playlist at the moment?
The Chats new album is awesome. I’m loving a few of the album tracks which are a bit more experimental, reminding me of The Ramones a little. Machine Gun Kelly is another one, I just absolutely love his voice and lyrics. Also, I have recently rediscovered my love for the Cat Empire. Their debut album was the second album I ever owned.

Can you tell us a fun fact about each member of the band?

  • Mitch can juggle and was also quite the yoyo fan. In primary school he started a yoyo club.
  • Jack sometimes dresses up like Batman
  • Schmidty wants to get married in the Stick Shed.
  • Jackson found his first grey hair beard the other day
  • I just got a new cat called Frida
