Metalcore mainstays Ocean Sleeper return with their latest single, Light In My Dark – the band’s most raw and exhilarating drop yet. Alongside the release, the band are thrilled to announce their long-awaited debut record Don’t Leave Me This Way, due out Friday November 8.
Tackling a deeply intimate breadth of subject material, the release of Don’t Leave Me This Way will see the band head out on a national album tour to grace fans with their signature emotive and dynamic live performance. Light In My Dark was recorded and produced in the USA by legendary producer Kris Crummett (Issues, Dance Gavin Dance, Sleeping With Sirens), along with the remainder of the album. The band answer some questions for Hi Fi Way.
How has the build-up been leading up to the release of the album?
It’s been pretty crazy! A small timeline but managed to get it all together! Over the moon with the album art by Neal Walters/ Marcel Gadacz we were album to create ourselves rather then digitally make. Really excited to be back on tour with these songs too!
We spent the first half of the year touring extensively through Australian capital cities and regionally. Playing our first international festival was amazing too, especially being a headline act beside Mayday Parade!
Was the process of making Don’t Leave Me This Way as challenging as you thought?
The process of writing DLMTW had its contrasts of fun and hard times, and many late nights like any other release does. We had a deadline to have songs finished before we left for America which pushed us to write a lot, I think we have created something really special and not just a heavy record, something that contrasts from our influences of metal to pop smoothly!
All the songs are a massive level up from everything we had previously released. Everyone really upped their game on this creation and I’m really proud of us all! I think the hardest part was getting us together in the same room for writing due to living hours apart and different work commitments etc.
Sonically, how would describe your music?
Pop metal is probably as fitting as it gets. We have some big influences ranging from pop punk, heavy metal and pop music. Our debut album is a perfect demonstration on zoning in on those influences.
Who would you consider to be the biggest influence on your music and why?
For me vocalists I’ve always loved are Oli Sykes (Bring Me The Horizon) and Sam Carter (Architects). They both throughout their music career have improved so so much into vocal ranges and styles that I wanted to learn myself. Sam’s pitch screams are just incredible. Oli’s dirty/clean vocals have been something I’ve always admired since their song sleepwalking and that style is something I really wanted to learn and take on in our song ‘Killing Me’ which I’m so excited for people to hear.
Best piece of advice you have been given?
It’s kind of simple really, just be kind and humble to everyone you meet. Make sure you treat everyone with respect as you would want to receive.
How did the band get together?
The music really started when we were working together on previous projects, some of them fell apart so we were in this position where we had an opportunity to start something together.
We needed a drummer and spent a while wondering what we would do for one until Ionei introduced us to his friend Jarred who used to play drums in his old band years ago. Jarred started playing drums again and joined OS and has been killing it ever since.
What’s next for Ocean Sleeper?
We have our debut album to finally drop then we will be taking that around Australia for our album tour! 2020 is proving to have exciting things waiting for us and we are really keen to try and get over seas again for some more shows!
