UK indie art rockers Sports Team today share their brand-new single Fishing, via their new Australian label, Dew Process. The London six-piece met at uni in 2017 and have since become part of the UK guitar music revival. They swiftly made a name for themselves on the back of visceral, erratic live shows – a feature that has remained their hallmark. Their debut EP Winter Nets was produced by Dave McCracken (Ian Brown, Depeche Mode), and released in January 2018, and served as a darkly humorous introduction to their weird world, channelling lyrical cynicism that touches on young professionals and provincial UK clichés. The band answer some questions for Hi Fi Way about their new single.
How has the build-up been leading up to the release of the single Fishing?
Probably more engagement from the online fishing community with this one. Think Jeremy Wade has challenged us to a carp off at Bewl Water.
What’s the story behind the single?
We all lived in Westbourne Park together where we used to see these commuters coming home from work and fishing on a dead canal. Never saw a catch. It’s about those characters, the sense of yearning in a prosaic life.
Are you continue to work towards an EP or album release?
They’ll definitely be an album Q1 next year.
Sonically, how would describe your music?
I think we’re a pretty straight rock band. We just sound different because we sing about what we know, mundane middle England. We try to romanticise it rather than send it down or comment.
How did Sport Team get together?
We were all studying at Cambridge together, listening to a lot of Pavement in our rooms. Then we ended up playing parties, people seemed to like it so we lived in London together after we graduated.
How did you come up with the band name?
There were worse options believe me. Hopefully it evokes the sense that it’s a bit of a gang of mates. The reality tends to be that we just get asked about our favourite sports in interviews.
Who would you consider to be the biggest influence on your music and why?
John Betjeman – he’s got this brilliant way of doing social comment through the characters he writes about, never condemns. If you listen to our songs it’s always about the characters.
Best piece of advice you have been given?
Don’t let an employer steal your youth. I’m so glad we’re not in offices anymore.
Are there plans to tour Australia?
We want to more than anything. Love bands like Gizzard and Amyl and the Sniffers, AC/DC. At SXSW this year the head of Laneways promised me he’d book us, think after he’d had a few nose beers, I trusted him though. Would hate to see him made a liar.
How exciting is 2020 looking for Sports Team?
Wild. Don’t think there are any bands in the UK doing the sizes of venues we are before their first album.
