The Sex Cult Cousins LIVE! LIVE! LIVE! @ Cupola The Garden of Unearthly Delights, Adelaide 28/02/19

Ok when I decide to see The Sex Cult Cousins I really had no idea what the show was about so when we entered the tent and there were no chairs I was dumbfounded. “What kind of a show is this?” I thought to myself. Well its the kind of show you would see at a pub late on a Friday night. Its three musicians; Drummer Paul, Guitarist Sam and Lead Singer Tommy rocking for 45 minutes. When I say rocking I mean rocking.
At first I was WTF? Yes I was in shock and thought what is this? Who are they? What did I come to see? But three songs in and I was hooked. The quirky style of lead singer Tommy is like a car crash. You don’t want to look but you can’t help it. His unique style of singing and performing is addictive to watch in a very weird and satisfying way. It could be described as a cross between Peter Garret meets AC/DC.
While I had no idea what the lyrics were of each song one that stands out was “Back Door Betty.” Tommy did say it was a song about a girl he used to love but then there was mention of backdoors and cocks. Another lyric was Chills and Fever as he said that repeatedly too. He told us he wrote the song Hot Love and Cold Beer in the last few days. It was a catchy little ditty I must say. I think I will just remember the performance as is and not get too hung up about the lyrics!
Tommy sings his songs with conviction and you really believe his woes. The hip swaying doesn’t resemble Elvis maybe a punk Elvis but I really couldn’t help but to fall in love with him. His piercing and penetrating voice has you spellbound and his charm is as sweet as candy. He asked a person in the crowd “Fuck it’s hot. Are you wearing a dress? Can I borrow it?”
There was a musical interlude while Tommy disappeared but when he came back he surprised us with an acapella ballad so soft and sweet you had to ask are we at the same gig? But not for long when Tommy shouts “Enough of that we’re going out on a banger” and screams and rocks his way through the last song of the night called I Got You.
The songs are catchy and full of punch. The crowd loved it and by the end were dancing and cheering like it was a party. This is one show you need to go see if your still hanging out in the late shifts of the The Garden. Its a 11pm rock and roll show that is just a blast!
