Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever Tour Starts This Week
It’s been an incredible year for Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, who released their debut album Hope Downs to worldwide critical acclaim in amongst multiple international tours. Ivy League Records, I OH YOU and Converge Management are so excited to welcome the Melbourne band back home for their biggest local headline tour yet, kicking off this week!
Joining them across the run, which includes sold out shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide include Body Type (all shows excluding Brisbane), Bored Shorts (Sydney), Calmly (Perth), Gymnastics In The Seventies (Geelong), LOOBS (Melbourne) and Shrimpwitch (Melbourne).
To celebrate their highly-anticipated return to Australia, Rolling Blackouts C.F. have dropped the video for album track Sister’s Jeans. Directed by Riley Blakeway, the clip was made possible thanks to The Levi’s® Music Prize. Another stellar addition to the Hope Downs collection, it follows clips for Time In Common, An Air Conditioned Man and Talking Straight.
Fran Keaney describes how the track came together:
”The first lines ‘stand on the morning / head like a weathervane’ came immediately – that was the clue. Then was the slow process of finding the other pieces to fit. The song is a platonic love song. It offers no answers. Just says, ‘Hi, I see you’”
The band’s sophisticated debut album has been embraced by lovers of their early EPs, Talk Tight and The French Press, and new fans alike. Since its release in June, it has been championed by triple j, Double J, FBi Radio, Pitchfork, The Guardian, Paste Magazine, NME, Rolling Stone US, BBC 6 Music, Stereogum, DIY Mag, and countless others.
Hope Downs was largely written in 2017 in the band’s Melbourne rehearsal room. Named after a vast open cut mine in outback Australia, it possesses a robust full-band sound laced with driving rhythms, wry lyricism, and quintessentially Australian guitars. Core songwriters Fran Keaney, Joe White, and Tom Russo bunkered down and wrote as the chaos of the world outside unavoidably seeped into the song writing process.
“We felt like we were in a moment where the sands were shifting and the world was getting a lot weirder. There was a general sense that things were coming apart at the seams and people around us were too,” Russo explains. “The songs on this album are like a collection of postcards about wider things that were going on, seen through the lens of these small characters.”
It’s been a momentous twelve months for the band, who’ve been touring the world virtually non-stop. They’ve sold out headline shows in San Diego, San Francisco, Denver, Chicago, Toronto, Vancouver, Philadelphia and New York City, and played some of the world’s biggest music festivals, from Coachella, The Great Escape, Primavera, and Shaky Knees to Lowlands, Pukklepop, Green Man and Splendour in the Grass.
