SheWolf
Melbourne’s very own rock triplets, SheWolf have released their highly anticipated debut album. The Other Side. These feisty twenty-one year-old rock chick triplets really must be heard to be believed. This album, featuring all-original material, was written and recorded during the period between 2015 to 2018 alongside Chris Gatz (GM Sound Studios) & producer Chris Themelco (Monolith Studios). In this time the band also played well over a hundred shows in their native Australia as well as maturing as both an ensemble and as songwriters. Vocalist Serena Vlahos answers some questions for Hi Fi Way: The Pop Chronicles.
How exciting has the build up been to the release of your debut album The Other Side?
It’s been very intense. We’ve been hanging out to release this album for such a long time. We’ve been so fortunate to have had the pleasure of working with so many amazingly talented and knowledgeable people throughout this entire process, which has only made the excitement to share the album with the world build more and more.
Can you believe the amount of work that needs to go in to it to make it happen?
Now we can, having experienced it for ourselves. The number of hours spent not only by us, but very one else involved, putting a project of this size together would be up in the hundreds by now. And the work doesn’t stop once the album is actually released either.
What was the biggest lesson you have learnt from making the album that you wouldn’t do again?
Next time we just want to try and get everything done a little faster, it was a very drawn out process and waiting to get everything done was pretty torturous. Next time we’d want to work to get everything done to a stricter time line.
How did Shewolf get together?
We’re sisters so the relationship between us was obviously already there, and it was a spur of the moment sort of decision, something we just thought we’d try out, and after a few days of playing together we never turned back.
Did you ever thinking you would be in a band with your sisters?
We were always into performing arts as kids, but we never considered playing music. We’d never taken lessons for our instruments or discussed playing music individually, let alone together. It was a left field idea that seems to have stuck.
Where did the name come from?
We threw around so many ideas for a name. It was the only one that we all agreed we liked upon first hearing it.
How would you describe the Shewolf sound?
We definitely base our sound on classic rock, but we pull inspiration from all styles and genres to create something that’s a little unique and hard to label. We say that it’s a mixed bag, with something for everyone.
Collectively, what bands/artists have influenced Shewolf the most?
Classic Aussie rock bands like INXS and Cold Chisel as well as international bands like Def Leppard, Heart and Joan Jett and the Black Hearts were part of our music education as kids. Individually we listen to lots of different artists across multiple genres and when you pool that all together, you get our music.
Are you looking to tour around the country over the summer? What’s the plan from here for Shewolf?
Since the album dropped we’ve been booking lots of shows, we just want to do what we can to promote and get it out there. If the opportunity to go interstate or international comes knocking we’d be more than excited.
