Cam Avery Solo Album Announced

Following his debut release C’est Toi and signing with iconic US label ANTI (Wilco, Tom Waits) late last year, Perth-bred/NY-based artist, Cameron Avery today unveils new single Wasted On Fidelity.’ The track joins details of Avery’s highly anticipated debut solo album Ripe Dreams, Pipe Dreams, set for release March 10 via ANTI and Spinning Top Records and the announcement he’s secured a place on the 2017 South By Southwest (SXSW) lineup.
With a series of headline dates beginning this Saturday, Avery will treat audiences to a preview of his new material and rich solo approach, in intimate venues across Perth, Sydney and Melbourne. Newcomer Slow Dancer takes on support duties along the east coast, with local favourites Boat Show in Fremantle. The string of shows follows his recent support slots for luminaries The Last Shadow Puppets and HAIM.
The second cut off his debut solo album, Wasted on Fidelity is a wry and swinging glimpse into the debauched haze following a failed relationship. Having made LA home over the past two years and working with Jonathan Wilson (Father John Misty, Erykah Badu, Elvis Costello), Avery’s solo aesthetic has progressed from the distortion-soaked sound of his first project The Growl to a more clear, ambitious and cinematic sound.
Inspired by the old records he loved —Johnny Hartman, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Sarah Vaughan, Etta James, Avery says of the self-produced album, “I just started saying ‘yes’ to things while making the album. I figured: I’m in my mid 20’s, I play in a band, I live in Los Angeles—I’m ripe to dream. But the pipe dream, the underlying theme of the album, if you really listen, is that all I really want is to have someone in my life and to be in love.”
With his deep, husky baritone, Avery harnesses the dark power and humor of artists like Nick Cave, Scott Walker, and Tindersticks. On Ripe Dreams, Pipe Dreams, Avery channels train-wreck romanticism into timeless music for the modern age. The result is a bold new direction, resulting in a beautiful body of work driven by Cameron’s soulful wit and sweeping arrangements.
