Maple’s Pet Dinosaur Releases New Single ‘Big Mouth’
Following a triple j First Play on Home and Hosed this week, 16-year-old Australian rock wunderkind, Maple’s Pet Dinosaur releases her new single Big Mouth via Warner Music Australia and In Bloom. Written in a sudden burst of inspiration fuelled while listening to her discman and scribbling lyrics in her school notebook, ‘Big Mouth’ highlights Maple at her most biting and playful. The track pairs a dynamic, Beastie Boys-inspired delivery with unbridled energy.
Speaking on the track Maple said, “Big Mouth sounds like the posters on my bedroom wall. A slap bass detonation inspired by Mr Bungle and Primus, but it’s also got probably, the poppiest chorus I’ve ever dropped so it’s hopefully good for mosh pit singalongs too- having the legendary DJ Kilmore scratching on the track is a cherry on top and it really helped me nail that funk-metal energy I was going for. Lyrically, Big Mouth explores the idea that a lot of men still think girls should be quiet, so I wanted to celebrate the idea of having a Big Mouth.
The verses are kinda braggy with some flex type bars- I wrote these lyrics almost like an affirmation to get out there and believe in myself, even when I might be getting doubted- it’s a sick song to get amped up to.”
With an ever-expanding global social footprint, Maple teased Big Mouth with a video shot on an Uber dashcam.
“My tastes are hella eclectic, I try to take inspiration from everywhere while avoiding replicating anyone, visually sometimes I feel like making stuff cinematic (like Child’s Play) and other times I just make things as ratchet as I can. Big Mouth deserved the ratchet treatment, so I made a couple of pretty random DIY videos for it,” Maple laughs.
Last month, Maple released Child’s Play, the title-track from her debut EP. The track is written from her perspective as a teenage girl navigating adult, often male-dominated festival and club environments. The release has further accelerated Maple’s already rapid rise, with US Riff Magazine praising the song’s “aggression, genre fusion and Maple’s vocal/musical finesse”, while the UK’s Metal Hammer described the track as “unique and striking” and named it one of their Tracks of the Week. NME, The Music Network, The Music and Rolling Stone Australia have also spotlighted Maple as one of Australia’s emerging artists, while Spotify placed her on the cover of its New Noise playlist. Her distinctive metal-pop-horror aesthetic has also caught the attention of Ice Nine Kills, with frontman Spencer Charnas inviting Maple to their recent sold-out Sydney show.
To celebrate the release of her much-anticipated debut EP Child’s Play, Maple will launch the record in blockbuster fashion with a special one-off, all-ages event at Newcastle’s revamped ‘90s multiplex, Tower Cinemas, on Friday 30 October. The hometown celebration will bring together some of Newcastle’s finest young talent, including Trophy Wyfe, Filthy E and the Clean Teens and Bardvarkk, for a night of live music, marking another major milestone in Maple’s rapid rise.
