The War On Drugs Return With ‘Who’s That’ Their First New Music Since 2022
The War On Drugs return with the new single, Who’s That, their first new studio recording released since 2022. Written and produced by band leader Adam Granduciel at his Burbank studio compound, Who’s That is a rousing anthem that progressively swells, growing bigger with each listen. Bolstered by Anthony LaMarca’s drums, Dave Hartley’s bass and a swarm of his own electric guitars and keyboards, Granduciel emphatically contemplates, “Did I blow it? // Did it just explode? // There’s lion hanging from my teeth // I can taste it but I can’t get close,” before reflecting, “It’s only my depression, baby.” “The War on Drugs’ music could change the dimensions of a room” (Pitchfork), and Who’s That is clear proof.
“‘Who’s That’ was written in 10 minutes somewhere between first coff ee and school drop off ,” comments Granduciel. “It’s a song about trying to love yourself despite things we can’t always control, like the anxiety, depression and self doubt that may stand in the way of living the life we truly desire.”
Who’s That is accompanied by a Max Flick-directed video featuring Granduciel on a surreal late night stroll around the streets of Burbank.
