Digital Abyss @ ILA, Adelaide 30/6/2026
The team at Illuminate Adelaide have joined together with ILA – Immersive Light and Art to bring Luminary Artist in Residence Miguel Chevalier for his Digital Abyss exhibition. This is the first visit to Australia for world renown multidisciplinary and experimental artist Chevalier. He started in fine arts in the 1970s and slowly transition to digital art in the early 1980s. Combing traditional visual mediums with digital and now AI it brings unlimited possibilities and a new world of art along the way.
Always one to embrace new technologies Chevalier sees the importance of the ever-changing landscape of the digital space. Instead of it being obstacle or restriction to modern art he pushes the imagination to create endless possibilities through the digital world.
Digital Abyss explores the unknown depths of the underwater. Inspired by the deep ocean and the wonders that lie beneath. Chevalier explained that his fascination of plankton and its importance in the ecosystem inspired him to create this multisensory exhibition. Splashed with vibrant colours and interactive LED screens the artwork changes with the movement of the visitor via hidden sensors creating a different experience with each visit.
Music also plays an important role with visuals changing according to movement. Jacopo Baboni Schilingi has composed a haunting yet dreamy underwater vibe piece that reflects the deep ocean depths.
Mixed with AI projections, robotic drawings, glowing lightworks and 3D sculptures, Digital Abyss is an exhibition that immerses you way down into the deep blue. It’s reflective, inspiring and an exploration between the real and virtual.
The exhibitions runs until 19th July at ILA 63 Light Square, Adelaide.
