Sonic Reducer Reveals New EP ‘Living Room’

Canberra’s punk four-piece, Sonic Reducer, uncovers their stark new EP, Living Room, out now independently.

Living Room reflects the chaos of growing up amid a turbulent state of affairs. On this body of work, the band trades raucous energy for a more melodic approach to their songwriting, while still keeping the Sonic Reducer DNA at heart. Across the EP, themes of self-discovery, confusion and emotional uncertainty mirror the band’s own evolution as both people and artists, capturing the frustration of navigating forces beyond your control. Written to feel, not to fit – five tracks that confine genres, balancing vulnerability and tension, marking the band’s boldest release to date.

The band share: “Living Room is our third EP, filled with themes of homesickness, nostalgia, and exploring the threshold between adolescence and adulthood, friendship and frustration, obligation and obedience. It has our best songs yet.”

Led by the jangly single Julien, filled with propulsive guitar riffs wrapped around Cormac’s draped vocals, “I don’t want to get out of bed this time, don’t want to have to use my head this time”. The track finds the band at their most rhythmically in sync, with every member delivering a part that feels essential to the song’s emotional weight.

The penultimate track of the EP, All I’ll Ever Know, channels the early-2000s indie sleaze era with a dose of Ramones-style snarl. Encapsulated by a frantic, erratic guitar solo that is equal parts fuzzed-out chaos and sharp reflection of the world we’ve found ourselves in.

Living Room arrives on the back of the poignant, infectious post-punk ballad Rosebank, the brooding lo-fi cut of Song for Steven and their first release of 2026, I Know (in the end), swiftly attracting attention from Rolling Stone AU, The Music, Happy Mag, Fashion Journal, 10 Magazine, triple j, 4ZZZ and more, with support from triple j Unearthed and SYN FM.

Tonight they take it live with their biggest tour to date, kicking off in Naarm/Melbourne at the Retreat Hotel, then rolling through Ngunnawal/Canberra, Dharawal/Wollongong and Eora/Sydney, followed by a festival slot at the Beer & BBQ Festival in Tarndanya/Adelaide, closing out the celebrations in Mulubinba/Newcastle.

The band capped off 2025 with a string of sold-out East Coast shows, adding to their growing list of live accolades, including sharing stages with DZ Deathrays and Cosmic Psychos as well as delivering a standout performance at Spilt Milk. Away from the stage, Cormac McKahey was awarded ‘Best Live Voice’ at the 2023 NLMAs, while the band took home both ‘Best Live Act’ and ‘Artist of the Year’ at the 2024 MAMAs following their debut EP release, SKEWBALL.
