Cloning On New Single ‘Just As You Are’
Selling out shows around Australia and racking up millions of streams, Perth indies, Cloning have emerged as one of Australia’s most singular alt-rock acts. Swirling with heartfelt, soft-spoken charisma and eerie hues, their ethereal new single, Just As You Are, expands on the quartet’s established alternative charms and is out now.
With billowing soundscapes, lush driving beats balanced with poised serenity, and calming introspection courtesy of lead vocalist Felix Parker, Just As You Are flutters with nods to the likes of Radiohead, Everything Everything, Midnight Oil, Slowdive and The War on Drugs, expertly mastered by Brian Lucey (Cage The Elephant, Royal Blood, Arctic Monkeys) while also pushing the Cloning collective into spectacular new heights. The band answer a few questions about the album.
How has the build-up been leading up to the release of Just as You Are?
It’s been great, we’ve been working on lots of new music and trying to experiment more with our production techniques, we’re really excited to have this one out!
Was the process of making your single as challenging as you thought?
The song went through seventeen versions/mixes before the final one which is a record for us. We are perfectionists but this one definitely took a bit longer than usual.
Sonically, how would you describe your music?
Ethereal, cinematic, good, not boring, with some healthy existential angst.
Who would you consider to be the biggest influence on your music and why?
Radiohead has been a massive influence on us. I think it’s the way they experiment with their guitar playing and take their music in different directions you wouldn’t expect – while making it sound quite effortless – that we have always really admired.
Best piece of advice you have been given?
That everyone is doing one thing you should do the opposite, also that you make your own luck.
What is the “Cloning” life story?
Jack, Nic and Felix have been mates since school. We’re good mates with Bevan’s (our guitarist) cousin which is how we met Bevan. Bevan grew up in Kalgoorlie (Goldfields WA) and joined the band when he moved to Perth after school.
Are you looking to tour more broadly?
We’d like to tour internationally, the UK and New Zealand are big goals of ours – we love and are influenced by many of the great bands that have come out of those countries.
What’s next for you?
We’re playing BIGSOUND in Brisbane in September and have a bunch more music on the way for later in the year, as well as some more touring announcements.
Who’s your favourite Adelaide artist/group at the moment?
We’re really digging Puree from Adelaide, really good tunes https://www.instagram.com/pureeband/
