The Rions Unveil New Single ‘Maybe I’m Just A Freak’
Following the announcement of Maybe I’m Just A Tour – their live return to the UK and EU set for this November – Eora/Sydney-based four piece The Rions reveal their latest single, Maybe I’m Just A Freak.
Confessional lyricism meets dynamic arrangement in this piano-led ballad, facing the conflicting emotions tied up in a messy past relationship. Speaking on the song, the band share, “This track is an introspective exploration of a relationship breakdown. The universal questions everyone asks about where things went wrong and who to blame – ‘Was it my fault?’ ‘Was it their fault?’”
Maybe I’m Just A Freak continues the group’s refined sonic evolution of late, first showcased in the resolute Shut You Out. Championing an authentic songwriting voice reminiscent of The Japanese House or Sam Fender, the single was praised by Rolling Stone Australia as “a decisive and emotionally charged anthem”, amongst further press support across NME, Ones To Watch, Tone Deaf, and The Music, amongst The Rions’ return to the #1 spot on triple j’s Most Played Songs.
Graduating from high school up-and-comers to prominent indie rockers with their debut Minivan EP, The Rions’ 2024 follow-up Happiness In A Place It Shouldn’t Be debuted at #4 on the ARIA Top Australian Albums Chart, with acclaimed singles Passionfruit and Physical Medicine cracking triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2024 – marking the band’s fourth consecutive year of Hottest 100 appearances.
Outside the studio, the four-piece have established themselves one of the country’s most prolific live acts: completely selling out their Sweet Cocoon Tour early in the year, their 21-date Happiness In Places EP Tour to close out 2024 was their biggest yet. Showing no signs of slowing down, The Rions have also just been announced on the Spilt Milk festival line-up alongside Kendrick Lamar, Doechii and more, heading to Ballarat, Perth, Canberra and Gold Coast this December.
After making their international debut in Aotearoa / New Zealand last year, the band would then set their sights towards the UK & EU with a co-headline tour with Pacific Avenue, selling out shows in London, Leeds and Manchester. The Rions cannot wait to return for round two this November, with headline shows (and the promise of new music) scheduled for Bournemouth, Cornwall, Bristol, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester, London and Amsterdam.
