Radical Son Releases New Album ‘Bilambiyal’

A stirring and powerful celebration of cultural connection alongside masterful performances, Kamilaroi and Tongan artist Radical Son unveils his sophomore album Bilambiyal (The Learning), out now via Wantok Musik. Boasting thirteen tracks that swell with dynamic meaning and gripping arrangements, Bilambiyal (The Learning) also offers a deeply powerful statement of devotion to country, armed with harmonious traditional and modern sonic hues.

Releasing via Wantok Musik, and following on from his debut release Cause ‘N Affect, Bilambiyal (The Learning) was also crafted alongside a powerhouse team, including Full Circle Audio, Marcus Longfoot, Andy Robinson, David Bridie, Frank Yamma, Emma Donovan and many more lending their magic to the end result. Heralded by its lead singles Elder, Until You Call My Name, and Yuluwirri Wandabaa (The Rainbow Dreaming), Bilambiyal (The Learning) delves deep into Radical Son’s passion and advocacy for culture and connection in the modern age alongside themes of reflection, growth and, ultimately, learning. Read our Q&A with Radical Son.

How has the build-up been leading up to the release of Until You Call My Name?
It’s been good to work with a team of people to get this out there. Happy it’s done now. I look forward to performing the songs and meeting the audiences now.

Was the process of making your single as challenging as you thought?
No, it’s pretty easy working with my creative team. My co-writer Marcus Longfoot from Full Circle Audio and my label Wantok Musik have a great ear for music. I’ve been able to learn so much from working with them.

Sonically, how would you describe your music?
My music is a mix of the influences I had growing up. From reggae to hip hop and soul and country. I can’t really put myself in one box, I just enjoy the challenge of exploring my creativity and making something new.

Who would you consider to be the biggest influence on your music and why?
One of the people who first helped me to create music and show me that there was the possibility of a career in this space was Steve Balbi. I first worked with him over twenty years ago and his advice has stayed with me this whole time.

Best piece of advice you have been given?
We can’t keep working together if you’re going to keep using.

What is the “Radical Son” life story?
I’m finding my way the hard way – Learning is the most important thing in life. What is the meaning of life if it is not to learn how it should be lived.

Are you looking to tour more broadly?
I’ll be in Brisbane soon and we have plans to perform around the country with Bilambiyal in the next few months.

What’s next for you?
I’ll keep writing and performing, writing and performing.

Who’s your favourite Adelaide artist/group at the moment?
Nancy Bates is someone to watch.
