GRXCE On New EP ‘Sorry For Being Sad’
Following a string of emotion-packed singles that has seen them regularly tour nationally, sell out hometown shows and play alongside The Rions, Beddy Rays and Pacific Avenue, NSW indie-pop quartet GRXCE now unveil their eagerly awaited debut EP, Sorry For Being Sad.
Produced and mixed with Fletcher Matthews (The Buoys, Dear Seattle), Sorry For Being Sad is a stellar debut from GRXCE – elevating their unique brand of “sad music you can dance to” to new heights. Through achingly honest lyricism, lush production and an engrossing conceptual storyline, GRXCE guides the listener down an immersive and reflective path of discovery, growth and change.
Congrats on the release of Sorry For Being Sad! What inspired the EP title?
Funnily enough the title actually came before the concept. I remember waiting at a bus stop with our bassist, Emily and I just was like “I have the EP title” and this was before we had even begun writing it. The name just felt right from the get go and even though the concept and the tracks evolved and changed over time the title always just encapsulated exactly how I felt at the time – both guilty and unapologetic for feeling led by my emotions.
The EP was recorded with Fletcher Matthews who has produced for The Buoys, CLEWS are more – what was that process like?
We actually recorded our first three singles with Fletcher so the environment felt super familiar and comfortable. We did the entire record in two weeks and a lot of the writing was done on the spot while recording. We unfortunately did have the AC break mid-recording during a heatwave in Sydney which was a little bit less fun but the weeks went quite fast and we were well looked after with many sweet treats and trips to the pub in between takes.
Is there a particular song that has become a favourite amongst the band?
We all actually have quite mixed opinions about our fave tracks on the record. Mine personally is Someday but we’ve had both Icarus and Costume Party come up as favourites as well. I think they all rotate their way through depending what mood we are all in.
Any songs off the EP that have become a favourite for fans at live shows?
We haven’t actually played all the songs live yet which is super exciting as it means our tour in August/September will be the first time we play the record in full. We’ve had a few people comment on Costume Party and Butterflies as they are the more upbeat songs on the record but also a lot of love for Someday which has been closing our set.
What three songs would you put on a Sorry For Being Sad Inspo Playlist?
- Stupidly by carobae
- I Think I by Anna Shoemaker
- Deep End by Holly Humberstone
You’ve just announced a huge national tour! Any places in particular you’re looking forward to playing? And is Adelaide on the cards soon?
Super excited to play Brisbane as we haven’t been up that way in a while as well as our hometown of Sydney of course. We would absolutely love to come to Adelaide if the demand was high enough. I went twice last year and fell in love with North Adelaide and the Botanic Gardens. Would love the chance to come back for a show!
We hear there’s also a short film on the way?! Can you tell us a bit more about that?
Yes! So we collaborated with a really awesome team including our close friend Sinead Campion (director & writer) and Riley O’Toole (cinematography) who we met in a chance encounter at a show we played in Manly. We made the film across about two months of filming and there was about a month or two before that for pre-production and a month afterwards for editing.
We were super lucky to showcase the film in full at cinemas in both Melbourne and Sydney, and actually sold out our Sydney screening! This film is a super personal journey for myself as it depicts a lot of my experiences in my early twenties getting diagnosed with anxiety for the first time, moving 7hrs away from my hometown and going through my first break up. It is super special to see the EP come to life, both conceptually and musically, on screen and we are so incredibly grateful to the entire cast and crew for bringing our idea to life. We will be premiering the film online very soon so you will have to stay tuned to find out when!
