Lochlan Watt From Run Talks ‘True Heaviness Is Time’
‘It’s a little bit more exciting that way and because we already have released three singles, people already have fifty percent of the release. I think the way that the artwork slowly sort of reveals the bigger picture, it’s kind of cool just to sort of have drip fed this thing and then all of a sudden, bang, here’s the full picture.’
Run leader Lochlan Watt explains today’s surprise release of second EP True Heaviness Is Time. Following on the debut EP For You Will Never Find Piece Within Your Quiet and single Everyone’s Cancelled, Everything’s Cancer, Run go back to focussing on the concept of time, its ever impending countdown and effect on lives putting other aspects of the bands history firmly in the past.
‘True Heaviness Is Time, it’s kind of about, a realisation that I’ve personally had. I suppose that despite everything I’ve been through with those really hard few years, the most brutal thing in life is just the ticking of the clock and how we’ll have to abide by that. And I feel like that is a, just a heavier concept to ponder than having cancer for me personally.’
The six track EP is seeping mixture of post hardcore metal, black metal, atmospherics and thought provoking lyrics. Opening with the title track, the feeling is like travelling through space before being hurtled like a comet to earth, the music pulling back before dropping hard into crushing riffs.
A selections of tracks named after the four seasons features a stellar cast of Australian artists in Amity Affliction Joel Birch, Trophy Eyes John Floreani and R.U.B’s Sophie Jest.
Each one of the seasons brings a different vibe to match the song, a bit like choosing what high quality wine to have with your dinner, it’s carefully thought out and complements the journey perfectly.
Spring has Joel Birch’s coursing rasp and a shredding solo, Summer with John Floreani has melody and soft singing tucked away within the blast beats, Winter and Sophie Jest blood curdling presence, a cold, dark, isolated vibe.
‘Run has evolved to this place where the visuals are almost as important to me as the music. I get as excited about collaborating on the visual element of it as I do on writing the songs. I think that the seasons are obviously a concept that’s very much linked to time.
The seasonal imagery gives you a lot to play with in terms of colours and just the vibrant visuals of the band. When we had sort of written the songs and we’re starting to piece it all together, it was like, okay, ‘Winter’ is obviously the darkest sounding song, it’s got the most blast beats. That sounds like the winter song. ‘Autumn’ is like getting a bit colder tonally as it approaches. ‘Summer’ got the big melodic bright chorus and Spring just has that burst of fresh energy and that kind of made sense.‘
The six track EP drops today and will be followed on the coming weeks with touring in parts of Australia. It’s a meticulously thought out concept of time and life. Run continue to create art, they continue to push boundaries and they continue to drop absolute bangers. In the time they have, they create true heaviness.
