Introducing Iggy Pop’s Favourite Punk Band THE LOVELY EGGS

It’s been four years since UK psych-punk-power duo The Lovely Eggs released their Number #1 Independent Chart topping album, I Am Moron but it’s not like they’ve been lazy, oh no. They dueted with their #1 fan Iggy Pop on the single I, Moron, made their own TV series EGGS TV and hosted it on YouTube, played a load of sold-out gigs and got their heads down and wrote a new album.

Recorded at their home in Lancaster with production work from the legendary Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala), who also mixed the album in his New York studio, the band reveal electric lead single My Mood Wave, which will be accompanied on glorious 7” by new single Memory Man. Having already received multiple plays on 6 Music and Radio X in the UK, My Mood Wave has an uplifting contemporary feel, haunted by a West Coast retro vibe that pulses and shimmers with a gorgeously addictive melody that will float around your head for days. Joining My Mood Wave is the hypnotic, robotic Memory Man – a can-like beat that sets up a transfixing world for album #7, which is due this month. Holly and Dave answer some questions about their singles.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
It depends on what album you listen to. On our early stuff it’s like a child making a kaleidoscope while listening to Red Crayola. Our later stuff is like listening to Black Sabbath while reading Richard Brautigan. We’re too punk to be hippie, too hippie to be punk. We’re camped somewhere in the middle.

What have been your most memorable studio moments of late?
Well going in the studio with Dave Fridmann is always pretty special. We’ve self recorded all of our albums to date but for our fifth album This is Eggland we got Dave Fridmann to help out. So he gave us some guidance on production and then we flew over to his studio in the US to mix the final record. We’ve done our last three records with him and every time we go over to work on stuff it’s a joy. There are so many memorable moments. This year we went over in December so the snow was a highlight and we got to go to Christmas parties and stuff. We guess that’s not probably classed as a “studio” moment but all these things seem to define our memories of the record. For the first record it was the fireflies. For the second record it was Big Foot. This record it was snow.

Who are your favourite Australian bands right now?
Well we pretty much love everything that Flightless put out. We’re big fans of Amyl and the Sniffers. Amy just absolutely takes no shit which is so great and something we have in common. You’ve absolutely got to stand up for who you are and what you believe in. Love the band Beans who are a psych/garage band out of Melbourne and Orb. Also of course Tame Impala and King Gizzard.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would you choose?
Well to be honest we’ve already collaborated with probably our ultimate favourite which is Iggy Pop. So it’s hard to top that really. We’ve worked with a few different artists and bands over the years. It’s just nice sometimes to step out of what you normally do and challenge yourself. We don’t know who might be next!

What can we expect from your upcoming record?
Well we’d say it’s not as full on and heavy or harsh as some of our more recent stuff that’s on say This is Eggland. It’s maybe more listenable. More introspective. It’s a snapshot of a really mental year. And when we were recording it we didn’t really think about how it should sound, it just poured out. So it definitely sounds quite different to the last two records. But still Egg. Cut any record we make down the middle and it still sounds like us.

What do you do when you’re not creating music together?
Well it seems that’s ALL we do! We’re independent and release our own records, book our own tours etc so there is always SOMETHING to do! Being in a band is a way of life for us. We have a child and we take him on tour with us. We’re always making stuff at home, working on music, art, TV shows, any number of ridiculous shit. It’s just our life. We don’t really do much else. Welcome to Eggland! Welcome to our world!

Any plans to come to Australia?
Would absolutely love to! And we’re trying to figure out a way of doing it right now. Without financial backing from a big label, it’s quite hard to get stuff like this happening but we’re working on it. We’ve got a booking agent for overseas shows now because it was almost impossible for us to find the time to book our international shows so there is every chance he’ll find a way for us to come over. There seems to be such a good scene in Australia with amazing bands. We’d love to come and be part of it.
