Nothing But Thieves “Dead Club City” (Deluxe)
Nothing But Thieves are a class act and right from their self-titled debut release in 2015. Fast forward to 2023 Dead Club City was released and oh boy this is a beauty introducing some fresh new elements to complement their rock-edged sound.
The lead single Welcome To The DCC makes a big statement with their “dance enthused” tune designed for big festival crowds but also opening the door to a new era for Nothing But Thieves. Having toured this album when the world got going again playing right here in Australia at Groovin’ The Moo there is no doubt that this album deserves more time in the sun.
That said the album is loaded with great singles and memorable moments in the ilk of Overcome, Keeping Your Ground and Tomorrow Is Closed. There is a next phase with the deluxe version of the album going deeper with three new tracks and two stripped back versions of a couple of gems on the album.
Already we have been treated to Oh No He :: Said What? This one’s a fast mover, loadded with synths and it’s hard to believe this wasn’t on the first cut of the album. Time :: Fate :: Karma :: God continues with same intensity and energy and if this is a sign of what’s to come we should be excited. Definitely a set staple for sure with their upcoming Australian tour.
Pure You is majestic giving some light and shade from what we have already heard. This ballad has plenty of poise and is delivered with the upmost delicacy building slowly to reach its peak. The stripped back versions of Overcome and Tomorrow Is Closed offer new perspectives on these songs and shows why there is so much to like about Nothing But Thieves. The only constant with this band is measured and well considered change.
The new new additions to Dead Club City are fantastic giving this album more time in the sun which it deserves as well as being a great addition for any collector.
