The Explorers Club @ Stirling Community Theatre, Stirling SA 22/3/2024
In a delightful blend of historical farce and satirical commentary, The Explorers Club takes you on a rollicking journey through the eccentricities of the late Victorian Scientific community. Set in 1879, the play centres around Miss Phyllida Spotte-Hume, who returns from her expedition with quite the scientific discovery that challenges the very masculine ‘Explorers Club’ version of scientific dogma.
The script cleverly skewers the rigid conventions of the era, particularly regarding gender roles and cultural assumptions. Through exaggerated characters and outlandish situations, the show is a humorous yet pointed critique of the attitudes prevalent in British scientific society of the time. The juxtaposition of the mythical location with the audacity of a female explorer further adds to the comedic tension, as the characters navigate a world teetering on the brink of both discovery and war.
Under the direction of Emily Currie, making her directorial debut with the Stirling Players, the production crackles with energy and wit. The ensemble cast complemented each other very well, Angela Short, Gary George and Joshua Coldwell exuded passion and commitment to their characters that was matched by the other cast members who brought their own unique and hilarious take on their respective parts. The comedic timing was impeccable, not one cast member missed a beat.
Special mention must be made to the intricate set design that transports you to a world of Victorian grandeur. From the historic Stirling Community Theatre emerges a visually stunning backdrop that perfectly encapsulates the clash between tradition and adventure at the heart of the play and a very special mentioned must be made of the giant snake, handmade by Currie herself.
The Explorers Club offers the quick wit of Fawlty Towers and the hilarity of the Vicar of Dibley performed with the charm of the Stirling Players. With its blend of farcical humour and biting satire, it proves that even in the most absurd of circumstances, there’s always room for a little exploration.
