The Sunday Estate ‘Make It Right’
Eora / Sydney-based indie rock band The Sunday Estate return with new single Make It Right. Grounded by the five piece’s signature striding rhythm, the dynamic new track flows between the intimate verses and the soaring, cathartic chorus.
Make It Right directly follows the band’s 2022 release Lost and Disappointed – a high-energy anthem that solidified the band’s place as one of Australia’s most exciting up-and-coming acts. Formed in 2018, The Sunday Estate spent their early days honing their sound and developing their musical identity, and burst onto the scene the following year with electrifying live performances that left audiences wanting more. The band answer some questions about the single.
How exciting was the build up to the release of the single Make It Right?
‘Exciting’ is very close to ‘anxious’ for us, but we’re really proud of the song and couldn’t wait to see it out there, especially since it’s been in our live set for a long time.
Can you believe how much work goes into a new single?
We’re not opposed to putting lots of TLC into each single, and doing lots of revisions has been the norm with these new tracks; each of them would have gone through two or three demos, plus live versions. Work shopping the songs that way is super useful. It gives us lots of opportunity to collaborate, and in a way do so with our audience too.
What’s the story behind the single Make It Right?
Make It Right is about rectifying mistakes, growing and learning. It took a long time to realise that when dealing with my own problems or thoughts, I’d inadvertently be pushing those I love out of my life. Make It Right is about that realisation, that your problems are your own – yes you can be upset, but hurting others while trying to heal yourself just creates a spiteful cycle where no one wins.”
Sonically, how would you describe The Sunday Estate?
Probably what grounds everything we’ve done is that we want to make rock music that sounds pretty and cute rather than tough and macho. Everyone in the band is also trying to do something that pushes their instrument into some new territory, for example Tom and Dave are often trying to make their two guitars sound like one, and we set ourselves little games like that to play within each song. That’s the approach we take to genre as well; we just try to have a go at lots of different styles, and that gives us difference between songs.
How did the band meet?
We met every which way – Conor and Finn have known each other forever, Tom joined through knowing Conor’s girlfriend, Dave met Conor at uni and Conor met Sven at a retail job.
What was the energy like in those initial jam sessions?
If we look back now, it was probably a little tense – Conor was desperate to get the band going and off the ground cause we had all these songs ready to play – but I think over time those sessions turned into really fun times. Everyone was also just starting to learn their instruments properly, so it was really fun to all get better separately, as well as in the band. We probably rehearsed for about two years before our first show, which I think is indicative of how much fun we have playing live.
Who are some of the biggest musical heroes for The Sunday Estate?
I struggle to answer this one but I’m always into bands that have stuck around for a long time and not burnt out as role models for us. Maybe The National or Radiohead? Conor is loving MUNA at the moment which is another good example.
How did you come up with the name The Sunday Estate?
I wish we had a cooler answer but we don’t. It was an amalgamation of two names we couldn’t decide on. Definitely better than our first band name though which was “The Bumbag Boys”
Is the band working towards an EP/album?
I think so. We’re putting out a lot of singles right now but there’s plenty of material banging around and we can all see it coming together as a longer release.
Are there plans to tour around the country?
For sure. We jumped on a national tour last year with Stand Atlantic and want to get out again.
What’s next for The Sunday Estate?
Lots of shows have been the game plan this year, so more of that. We need to get out of Sydney more this year so that’s on the cards. But also definitely more new music too, we’ve got a lot of great songs we’ve been playing live that we want everyone to hear!
