GEM Shares New Single ‘Ruins’ From New EP ‘Healing Feelings’

Often among the literal and metaphorical ruins, plenty of life’s gems and lessons can be found; and for Australian producer and DJ GEM, heartrending gold has evolved from heartbreak and self discovery, with her stunning new single Ruins, out today, softly and serenely billowing you away with its empowered authenticity. A lesson in healing and dreamy indie pop, Ruins also provides a glance into GEM’s new EP Healing Feelings which is out now.
Gentle, undulating and flowing with swooning melodics, Ruins pits invigorating yet simplistic textures against GEM’s ethereal vocals. Like a meditative surge of warmth and fresh renewal, Ruins greets as a spiritual and slow-burning delight, softly building with sultry beats, while also acting as the perfect introduction to the broader EP Healing Feelings. GEM answers a few questions about the single for Hi Fi Way.
How has the build-up been leading up to the release of the single Ruins?
Busy. I was finishing the EP and my Grammy NEXT program, designing shows and experimenting with what frequencies work best live to uplift audiences. I flew back to Sydney last week and had a presave show there which was great.
Was the process of making your single as challenging as you thought?
I love making music. Ruins was a beautiful process. As a producer I really love to have a strong vision before I start placing sounds. The vocal chain was probably the thing that took longest. I worked with Martin Estrada on this and we were very deliberate. I wanted it dry and crispy but still filled with emotion.
Sonically, how would you describe your music?
Chilled, downtempo in new age frequencies.
Who would you consider to be the biggest influence on your music and why?
Petit Biscuit and Sol Rising, because they showed me that I can do this style and carve out a good career. Sometimes I worry about the wellness frequencies being too niche, but it is what my heart wants to do.
Best piece of advice you have been given?
A record is exactly that. A record of where you were in your life when you made it. You don’t need to overthink it- if you don’t like it tomorrow make another.
What is the GEM life story?
I was tip toeing around my truest dream for a while (yes, I stole my own lyric 🙂 ) afraid to really go for it. I was told I was too old, not electronic enough, not new age enough and I realised I had been shrinking myself. Not speaking my truths and not really owning my space. So, artist GEM was born out of a life of creating but mostly for others. Assisting other people with their goals, which I love deeply but it was time for me to step into my true self. Gem Rpm was born and making music for myself has been the most freeing, happy, bold adventure so far.
Are you looking to tour more broadly?
I am currently on tour, going through California and then throughout the USA.
What’s next for you?
I look forward to bringing these wellness frequencies to more up tempo music, really pushing the boundaries of what we can do and how we think about healing music.
