What is it like living with a disability? How do people feel about living with their disability? December 3rd is marked as International Day of People with Disability and each year No Strings Attached Theatre of Disability presents ReConnect! This year’s ReConnect! themes were Dysconnection, Loving Our Imperfections, The Clique Club and That’s Not Helping.
The messages were clear. Being Connected, Being Loved and Being Heard. Performers gave the audience a perspective of how disabled people feel about the treatment from others in society and how important it is to have the feeling of connection with other human beings. The show had a little bit of thought-provoking reflection, a little bit of expressive dance, a little bit of comedy, a little bit of song and dance but more importantly a whole lot of fun!
Complimenting the live performance was video content of thoughts and reflections from each artist. Some felt more comfortable expressing their feelings via the video format where the audience could understand the challenges and concerns regarding their disabilities. But it wasn’t all serious or informative. The Painters was an entertaining video with lots of slap stick and cheeky comedy that had the audience laughing all the way through.
ReConnect! aims to change the way we see people with disability and provide an opportunity for the artists to work in the Arts where it can positively affect their lives. The message is of inclusiveness, understanding and the need to make the world a better place for people with disabilities to lead full, happy and productive lives. The No Strings company is here to break down barriers and ReConnect! 2021 did just that!
