Adelaide’s electrifying neo-psych rock group The Empty Threats have announced their highly-anticipated debut EP, which will be released via indie-label PAK Music on Friday 19 November.
The follow-up EP to 2019’s Ablutions is set to be their most finely tuned piece of work to date as the band continue to refine their unique sound. In 2021 alone, they’ve sold out a bunch of headline shows, played alongside Mildlife as part of the Adelaide Fringe festival, were selected as one of the top emerging artists in SA, and headlined a knockout performance at Adelaide’s iconic Thebarton Theatre (watch it here) – so it’s about time that the group serves us up with what we’ve all been patiently waiting for.
Mastered by Joe Carra at Crystal Mastering (King Gizz, The Murlocs, Amyl and the Sniffers, Pond, The Drones, Courtney Barnett, Tash Sultana), the EP was written and self-recorded in 2020 while in and out of lockdowns in South Australia. Most of the songs are reflections on the conditions and suppression of art in Australia during the pandemic, touching on interpersonal dilemmas and struggling personal relationships that the band faced over the year.
Empties have released two singles in the lead up to the highly-anticipated release. The first single U (released back in March) saw a triumphant return for the band with a slower ballad about self-reflection and personal development. The single’s official launch at Adelaide’s JIVE sold out two weeks before the event, cementing their notoriety amongst the Adelaide music community for their out-of-this-world live performance.
The latest single K “welcomed a heavier side of The Empty Threats’ sound as a grittier, punkier side of their alt-rock sound comes to light (Pilerats) alongside vocalist Stu Patterson’s signature melodies. The accompanying music video has been on regular rotation on ABC’s rage since its release in July; and in true Empties style, they sold out not one, but two single launch shows back-to-back in one night at immersive live performance venue The Lab.
As a staple of Adelaide’s live music circuit, Empties have performed alongside many Australian heavyweights including Methyl Ethyl, A. Swayze & the Ghosts, Mildlife and The Vanns. With an east-coast EP tour for late-2021 recently canned due to Australia’s ongoing travel restrictions, the band are focussing on an epic EP launch in their hometown of Adelaide. Stay tuned for more details.
The Empty Threats’ self-titled EP will be released on Friday 19 November via PAK Music.
